A method and apparatus for making real-time measurements of downhole properties during cement plug placement. A wired placement conduit is lowered downhole releasing a sensor package. The sensor package is capable of measuring downhole properties in real-time in the period while the cement plug sets.

A wellbore cleaning device comprises a tubular section, a helical scratcher mounted thereon. The helical scratcher contains flexible wires characterized in that the helical scratcher is able to rotate axially to the tubular section when a fluid flows axially to the tubular section. Methods of treating a subterranean formation are disclosed, using a fluid including an essentially metal-free organic crosslinker selected from amines, diamines, poly amines, polyamino polymers, alcohols, polyols, polyhydroxy polymers, hydroxyl amines, peptides and proteins, combined with a polysaccharide or cellulosic material having oxidized functional groups. The fluid is then introduced into a wellbore penetrating the formation to contact the formation. The polysaccharide or cellulosic material may have aldehyde groups as one example of an oxidized group, or any other suitable oxidized functional group. The polysaccharide or the cellulosic material may be oxidized using at least one of an enzymes, oxidizers, photooxidation, bacteria, catalyst, or other suitable technique. The fluid may also further include an inorganic crosslinker.

Embodiments of this invention also relate to a composition and a method for tailoring the rheology of a fluid for use in the oil field services industry including forming a fluid comprising a tetrakis(hydroxyalkyl) phosphonium salt and xanthan, and exposing the fluid to a temperature of about 20&#xb0; C. to about 200&#xb0; C., wherein a viscosity is observed that is at least about 5 percent higher than if no salt were present.

Rheology modifier comprising a tetrakis(hydroxyalkyl) phosphonium salt for polymer fluids

A method of treating a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore of a well having iron-containing components is carried out by introducing a treatment fluid into the wellbore of the well. The treatment fluid is formed from an aqueous solution, a mineral acid, a viscoelastic surfactant gelling agent and corrosion inhibitor system containing at least one of an alkyl, alkenyl, alicyclic or aromatic substituted aliphatic ketone and aliphatic or aromatic aldehyde. The treatment fluid is substantially free of any formic acid or precursor formic acid. In certain embodiments, the corrosion inhibitor system comprises a mixture of at least one of an alkenyl phenone or &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated aldehyde, an unsaturated ketone or unsaturated aldehyde other than the alkenyl phenone and &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated aldehyde, a dispersing agent, an extender and an alcohol solvent. A corrosion inhibitor intensifier may also be used in certain embodiments, which may include a mixture of cuprous iodide and cuprous chloride.

Self-diverting acid treatment with formic-acid-free corrosion inhibitor

The invention provides a method for perforating a well with a perforating fluid comprising a viscoelastic surfactant that essentially stops fluid leak-off after perforation in an overbalanced condition. Another aspect of the invention provides the perforating fluid in itself. The well has a wellbore defined by a generally cylindrical casing in at least a portion of the wellbore (i.e., the wellbore is cased, although it is not necessary cased in its entire length). The wellbore passes through a subterranean formation that comprises hydrocarbon formation fluids (such as oil and/or gas), at least in certain strata. The method comprises placing a perforating device in a wellbore which includes at least one explosive perforating charge that can be detonated in order to perforate the casing and allow the formation fluids to enter the wellbore. The casing is located between the subterranean formation and the perforating device. A perforating fluid including at least one viscoelastic surfactant is placed in the wellbore between the perforating device and the casing, in at least a portion of the wellbore. In other words, the perforating fluid is present in the wellbore adjacent to the perforating device. The explosive charge(s) in the perforating device is detonated, such that the perforating device forms at least one perforation in the casing that permits the flow of hydrocarbon formation fluids from the subterranean formation into the wellbore. As a result of the detonation, at least a portion of the perforating fluid is put in communication with the subterranean formation.

Methods of perforation using viscoelastic surfactant fluids and associated compositions

A sol of metallic alkoxide is pumped into a desired location in a wellbore and allowed to gel, creating solids in-situ. The sol is either unstabilized, requiring rapid placement before gelling, or the sol is stabilized, permitting off-site mixing. Sols can be stabilized with either surfactant or with interfacial polymers. Large concentrations of surfactant can be placed in the sol to create templates around which gelation occurs, creating porous solids.

In-situ formation of solids for well completions and zonal isolation

A composition and method is given for a well control fluid that is injected into a well during completion or remediation and prevents fluid flow from a formation into the well during operations (such as shut-in, or placement or adjustment of tools/hardware) when no fluid flow is desired. The composition includes a viscoelastic surfactant fluid system (VES) and a decomposable first solid material, preferably in fiber form, that forms a pack or plug in the well at the location where fluid would otherwise leak off, and then decomposes without intervention to release a product that is a breaker for the surfactant or the micelles of the VES. The composition optionally also contains a pH control agent and a second solid (that may also be a fluid loss agent) that affect the decomposition of the first solid.

Self-cleaning well control fluid

A viscoelastic gelled oil, for example gelled diesel or paraffin oil, is made with a gelling agent, for example a phosphate ester, a metal carboxylate, for example an aluminum carboxylate, and a gel-enhancing surfactant, for example a zwitterionic surfactant, for example erucylamidopropyl betaine. The gel-enhancing surfactant makes the gel viscoelastic, increases the stability and decreases the sensitivity to the concentrations of the gelling agent and the metal carboxylate. The enhanced viscoelastic gelled oils are used, as examples, in hydraulic fracturing, frac packing, gravel packing, diversion, fluid loss control, lost circulation control, sand control, wellbore cleanout, wellbore or pipeline sweeping, organic scale dissolution, organic scale removal, and drilling.

Gelled oil with surfactant

A method for increasing the rate of shear rehealing of fluids made with cationic, zwitterionic, and amphoteric viscoelastic surfactant fluid systems by adding an effective amount of a polymeric rheology enhancer selected from polypropylene glycols and block copolymers of polypropylene glycol and polyethylene glycol. For applications in which rapid shear rehealing is required, the rheology enhancer allows fluids to be made and used at lower viscoelastic surfactant concentrations. Preferred surfactants are betaines and quaternary amines. The fluids are useful in oilfield treatments, for example fracturing and gravel packing.
