The present invention provides energy curable compositions comprising self-initiating oligomers, amine synergists and Group IV metal chelates. The compositions optionally comprise acrylate monomers having carbonate ester, carbamate, or oxazolidinone groups. The compositions of the present invention exhibit improved cure, and are suitable for packaging, such as food packaging.

Self-initiated energy curable ink compositions

The present invention provides energy curable compositions that are curable using UV LED radiation. The compositions comprise vinyl methyl oxazolidinone (VMOX), as well as other components generally found in energy curable inks, such as ethylenically unsaturated monomers (in addition to VMOX), acrylated oligomers, and photoinitiators. The compositions are suitable for high speed flexographic or gravure printing.

LED energy curable ink compositions

A polymer complex is disclosed which is the reaction product of one or more polymers having a terminal or pendant hydroxyl group, or a terminal or pendent carboxyl group, or combinations thereof, with at least one metal complex and one alkyl phosphate. This polymer complex acts as an adhesion promotion agent as well as a viscosity stabilizer when formulated in a printing ink or coating.

Described herein are inks and coating compositions curable by exposure to UV energy sources including UV-LED energy sources, which include a polymerizable component selected from an ethylenically unsaturated materials, a photoinitiator component that is one or more photoinitiators, one of which is an acyl phosphine oxide photoinitiator; and a Group IV metal chelating agent. Improved cured is realized for the described inks and coating compositions.

Group IV metal chelates and their use in radiation curable ink and coating compositions

The present invention provides energy curable ink and coating compositions that comprise polymerizable compounds, photoinitiators, and colorants. The polymerizable compounds comprise one or more polymerizable monomers and/or oligomers, wherein at least a portion is 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol diacrylate. The inks and coatings of the invention exhibit excellent print properties after UV-LED, standard UV mercury vapor lamp, and electron beam cure.

Low migration energy curable inks

Described herein is an actinically curable adhesive composition, suitable for sealing flexible packaging, that includes an inert urethane polymer and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component selected from at least one monofunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, at least one multifunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a combination thereof, wherein the ethylenically unsaturated monomer component disperses the inert urethane polymer. The compositions are suitable for forming flexible packaging materials for foods and other materials, particularly sensitive materials. Also described are flexible packaging materials and a method for preparing an actinically curable adhesive composition.

Actinically curable adhesive composition with improved properties

Described herein are capacitive devices and methods for producing same using printing methods such as flexography, gravure, offset, lithography, etc. The capacitive devices are formed from printing conductive inks, non-conductive inks, masking ink layers, graphic artwork layers, and overprint layers on a substrate. Interaction between a conductive ink layer of the capacitive device with a touch screen device of a computer, tablet, smart phone, etc. causes a capacitive effect that allows information coded in capacitive device to be read, leading to an activity such as the download of content to the device having the touch screen.

An aqueous printing ink and coating composition contains colorant, one or more high molecular weight starches and one or more water soluble acrylic polymers or co-polymers.

A method of formulating ink for high-speeding printing includes controlling a surface tension of the ink to equal to or greater than 26 mN/m, equal to or greater than 28 mN/m, or equal to or greater than 30 mN/m. The surface tension is measured when the ratio of the total non-volatiles volume fraction of the ink to the maximum total non-volatiles volume fraction of the ink is a ratio between about 0.40 and about 0.90. An ink for high-speed printing includes one or more resins, one or more colorants, one or more solvents, and one or more additives. The ink can be a flexographic ink, a rotogravure ink, a heatset offset ink, or a publication gravure ink. A print of the ink includes less than 1% of pinholes by area. A method of printing includes preparing an ink and applying the ink to a substrate. The ink has a surface tension of equal to or greater than 26 mN/m, and the substrate moves at a speed of greater than 1200 feet/min.

Surface tension of inks for high speeding printing

Formulations for solvent-based flexographic or rotogravure inks, which are capable high-quality, defect-free printing at high speeds, contain flexographic ink resins solutions and solvent mixtures which are designed to maintain a dynamic solubility parameter in the ink as the dry state is approached during the printing process. The inks described show extremely high quality printing at linear press speeds above 1800 fee per minute (ca 0.549 km/min).

A method for the production of an improved water soluble resin binder for laminating printing inks has been discovered. The method comprises esterifying the carboxylated Diels Alder adduct produced from the reaction of rosin and at least one carboxylated dienophile with a sufficient amount of at least one polyol to produce a modified rosin having an acid number greater than 157. The modified rosin is reacted with a sufficient amount of an acrylic copolymer having an acid number greater than 180 under esterification conditions between 175 &deg; C. and 185 &deg; C. for a time sufficient to produce a resin binder having an acid number greater than 157. A laminating ink formulation of the invention comprises water, pigment, styrene-acrylic varnish, shellac varnish, alkanol and the improved water soluble resin binder of the invention as described above.
