A technique for reducing multipath distortion in a mobile FM receiver with a plurality of antennas is accomplished through a number of steps. Initially, a first antenna signal and a second antenna signal are received. The first antenna signal is weighted with a variable first weight and the second antenna signal is weighted with a variable second weight. The weighted first antenna signal and the weighted second antenna signal are then combined to provide a combined received signal having a combined signal level. The variable first and second weights are determined by an adaptation strategy that is substantially controlled by a first algorithm, when the combined signal level is greater than a predetermined signal level. When the combined signal level is less than the predetermined signal level, the variable first and second weights are determined by an adaptation strategy substantially controlled by a second algorithm.

Technique for reducing multipath distortion in an FM receiver

A technique for reducing multipath distortion in an FM receiver, with a plurality of switchable antennas, provides a fast distortion detector that monitors a received signal for significant distortion events of less than about 15 microseconds in duration. In response to a multipath event, the output of the fast distortion detector initiates a search for a lower distortion (better quality) antenna. To prevent frequent antenna searches from causing an audible disturbance, a threshold is introduced to desensitize the fast distortion detector. Threshold decay is a function of an overall received RF signal level. A slow distortion detector is also provided that measures distortions of the received signal relating to signal quality.

Technique for reducing multipath interference in an FM receiver

A system and method of injecting audio content into a radio system is provided. The method includes the steps of receiving in a radio receiver a first RF signal from an antenna and processing the signal at a select frequency within a radio frequency band. The method also includes the step of providing audio content from an auxiliary device. The method also includes the step of modulating the audio content from the auxiliary device and replicating the modulated signal to generate a replicated RF signal at the multiple frequencies within the radio frequency band. The method further includes the step of injecting the replicated RF signal into the radio receiver.

A method is provided for enhancing in real-time the playback of a broadcast data signal. The method comprises the steps of: (a) receiving a broadcast data signal at a player device; (b) storing the broadcast data signal on the player device; (c) generating an output signal based on the broadcast data signal substantially simultaneous to the storage of the broadcast data signal; (d) creating a time delay between the storage of the broadcast data signal and the generation of the output signal; and (e) adjusting the time delay between the storage of the broadcast data signal and the generation of the output signal, thereby manipulating the output signal from the player device.

Method for enhancing in real-time the playback of an audio broadcast signal

An optical superposition network that utilizes a time division multiplexing (TDM) protocol includes a first optical transmitter, a second optical transmitter and a receiver. The first optical transmitter transmits information in a tertiary mode during a time slot. The second optical transmitter transmits information in a tertiary mode during a different time slot. The information transmitted across the optical superposition network has an approximately constant average intensity such that the receiver can utilize a single decision threshold for the information received from the first and second optical transmitters.

Tertiary optical media interface

A central digital signal radio processor (DRSP) is separated from all analog inputs and outputs by digital data links. Each end of a data link couples to an interface which has transmit and receive capability using cancellation techniques to allow full duplex transmission. An antenna module located at the antenna processes much of tuning functions in analog and then converts the signal to digital and sends it to the DRSP for further processing. Transmitted digital signal from the DRSP are converted to analog by the antenna module and sent to the antenna. Microphones, tape and CD players and other inputs are similarly linked to the DRSP. The DRSP digital audio output is sent to speaker modules which convert to analog signals for driving speakers.

Distributed digital radio system

A radio with a tuner and other program sources uses a digital signal processor (DSP) to enhance the audio signal and to generate a stream of digital data including audio data and control data corresponding to loudness functions. A fiber optic data link couples the data stream to a plurality of remote DSP modules each of which drive one or more speakers. Each module contains a user programmed DSP, a digital to analog converter and an amplifier for each associated speaker. The DSP modules are identical except for software parameters which establish a transfer function and a loudness characteristic for each speaker. The same DSP modules and the same speakers can be used in several vehicle types and the system audio performance can be optimized by customizing software for each type of vehicle.

Distributed digital signal processing for vehicle audio systems

A digital phase-lock loop network that provides input and output clock signals to a digital data receiving system generally, and particularly to a data buffer contained therein, is disclosed. The digital phase-lock loop network provides bit-clock synchronization using a fixed input clock and an output clock having a variable frequency that is adjusted to correspond to the average input rate of the data samples into the data buffer. The digital phase-lock loop network allows the data buffer to be operated as a temporary storage device maintaining a nominal number of data samples therein at all times by avoiding any overflow and underflow data handling conditions that may otherwise cause loss of data. The digital phase-lock loop network of the present invention is particularly suited for the Eureka-147 system which has become a worldwide standard for digital audio broadcasting (DAB) technology.

Digital phase-lock loop network

A phase-locked loop circuit recovering original clock information and original stream of binary data both from Manchester-coded data is disclosed. The phase-locked loop circuit comprises first, second, and third exclusive-OR circuits each with two inputs and an output. The phase-locked loop circuit further comprises a controlled oscillator that generates two local clock signals that are phase shifted from each other, preferably by an amount of 90.degree., with the first being at 0.degree. phase shift. The 0.degree. clock signal is applied to one input of the first exclusive-OR circuit having Manchester-coded data at its other input. The 90.degree. phase shifted clock is applied to one input of the second exclusive-OR circuit having Manchester-coded data at its other input. The output of each of the first and second exclusive-OR circuits, after passing through associated circuitry, is applied to the third exclusive-OR circuit. The third exclusive-OR circuit produces an output signal having a frequency that is directly proportional to that of the original clock information. The output signal of the third exclusive-OR circuit is applied to the input of controlled oscillator which, in turn, locks the 0.degree. output phase shift to the Manchester-coded data allowing the stream of binary bits to be stripped therefrom. The frequency of the 0.degree. output phase signal, by the means of operation of the controlled oscillator, becomes or corresponds to that of the original clock information.
