In general, techniques are described for providing a virtual graphics processing unit driver by receiving, in a user mode of a guest process executed by a computing system, one or more graphics commands from an application of the guest process; triggering, in the user mode of the guest process, an operating system call in response to the one or more graphics commands; translating, in a kernel mode of the guest process, the operating system call into a first virtual buffer; translating, in the user mode of a host process executed by the computing system, the first virtual buffer into the operating system call; and sending, in the user mode of the host process, the operating system call to a graphics processing unit driver in a kernel mode of the host process.

An apparatus to facilitate thread synchronization is disclosed. The apparatus comprises one or more processors to execute a producer thread to generate a plurality of commands, execute a consumer thread to process the plurality of commands and synchronize the producer thread with the consumer thread, including updating a producer fence value upon generation of in-order commands, updating a consumer fence value upon processing of the in-order commands and performing a synchronization operation based on the consumer fence value, wherein the producer fence value and the consumer fence value each correspond to an order position of an in-order command.

Thread synchronization mechanism

Examples described herein relate to a graphics processing apparatus that includes a memory device; and a central processing unit (CPU). In some examples, the CPU is configured to: execute a producer to issue graphics command application program interfaces (APIs); execute a driver to translate graphics command APIs into executable instructions; and based on an idle state of the producer, execute a command translation code segment of the producer to translate graphics command APIs into executable instructions. In some examples, the execution unit is coupled to the memory device, the execution unit to execute one or more of the executable instructions. In some examples, the producer includes multiple portions such as application code, graphics pipeline runtime code, and command translation code segment.
