A remote control system which can reliably provide desired control while saving power. A remote control apparatus is capable of carrying out two-way wireless communication with an apparatus to be controlled. A control signal corresponding to a key switch for remote control is repeatedly transmitted while the key switch is being operated. Repeated transmission of the control signal is inhibited in accordance with reception of a predetermined signal from the apparatus to be controlled.

There is provided a portable storage device which makes it possible to largely reduce time that is taken to remove the storage cartridge that is inserted and cannot be handled. A removable hard disk cartridge contains a hard disk and a control circuit for control of writing and reading of data in and from the hard disk in a casing thereof. A main unit includes an automatic loading/ejecting mechanism that receives the hard disk cartridge into a predetermined inner position within the main unit and ejects the same out from the position, and a microprocessor that controls storage operation for storing data in the hard disk cartridge. Before the automatic loading/ejecting mechanism performs a receiving operation, it is determined whether access to contents recorded on the hard disk can be gained, and when the access cannot be gained, the receiving operation by the automatic loading/ejecting mechanism is inhibited.

A system generates a call according to the states of a photoreception unit of a call generator in response to data from a portable device. Data received by the photoreception unit from different types of portable devices can be processed and the portable device operation and the data transmission may be controlled according to the destination for the data and the mode of communication required by destination communication apparatus. Facsimile or telephone call data may be transmitted by the portable device in accordance with the type of destination communication apparatus.

A liquid crystal display device of a type, wherein a pair of flexible, transparent plates, each having on one surface thereof a transparent electrode to form thereon desired characters, patterns, and so forth, are arranged with the transparent electrodes opposed to each other, a spacer to maintain a constant space gap between the opposed transparent electrodes is provided between the pair of flexible, transparent plates uniformly over the entire surface thereof, and liquid crystal is sealed in a space defined between the two electrodes the distance of which is maintained constant by the spacer, and the spacer has a dot or linear structure.

A voltage step-up circuit, or booster circuit, wherein in response to a first signal a first switching element is enabled to charge a first capacitor with an input voltage while a second switching element is disabled, and in response to a second signal the second switching element is enabled to charge with the input voltage a second capacitor connected in series to the first capacitor while the first switching element is disabled. The sum of the voltages appearing across the first and second capacitors is derived as an output voltage. The 'ON' and 'OFF' times of the first and second signals may be varied, and the ratio between the 'ON' time of the first signal to the 'ON' time of the second signal may also be varied. The number of switching elements and capacitors may be increased as needed.
