A method in a telecommunications network comprises acquiring values of one or more parameters relating to traffic flow between a first group of nodes in the network. The method further comprises using a first reinforcement learning agent to dynamically adjust a first routing metric used to route traffic through the first group of nodes, based on the values of the one or more parameters, so as to alter the traffic flow through the first group of nodes.

Methods in a telecommunications network

A method for routing packet traffic through a network comprising a plurality of network nodes supporting RSVP-TE protocol and Segment Routing protocol. Each of the two protocols is associated with a separate set of labels, the method comprises calculating () a path through the network; checking support () for both protocols at nodes along the calculated path and encoding () the calculated path as a set of Adjacency Segment Identifiers. The method also comprises optimising () a label stack of the calculated path by substituting more than one adjacency SIDs with a node SID if a partial path identified by the substituted adjacency SIDs equals a shortest path. If all nodes along the calculated path support label stack depth equal to or deeper than the optimised label stack () then segment routing is used to set up the path. If a node along the calculated path does not support a label stack depth equal to or deeper than the depth of the optimised label stack () then an Explicit Route Object is used for signalling the calculated path using RSVP-TE ().

Method and apparatus for segment routing and RSVP-TE routing in transport SDN networks

The present invention relates to a method of and apparatus for configuring a link in a label switching communication network. The method implemented in a network node comprises determining formation of a communication link between the network node and another network node and sending link formation information to a link manager. The method further comprises receiving link configuration information for the communication link from the link manager and configuring the communication link in response to the received link configuration information.

Method of and apparatus for configuring a link in a label switching communication network

The present invention relates to a fault protection method and a fault protection device for an inter-domain link of a multi-domain network. The invention may be particularly applied to multi-domain networks providing end to end services such as an Ethernet service. Embodiments of the invention use a link protection group for an inter-domain link. Link protection group information relating to the link protection group is used to identify a replacement inter-domain link for a faulty inter-domain link that is configured for an inter-domain service. Once the replacement link is identified, the routing of the inter-domain service may be re-configured from the network element ports of the faulty inter-domain link to the network element ports of the identified second inter-domain link.

Fault protection method and fault protection apparatus in a multi-domain network

A Carrier Ethernet network comprises nodes connected by links. The network supports connectionless traffic flows between nodes. A network management system performs a method comprising: determining when an event has occurred in the network which may change bandwidth usage on a link of the network; determining traffic flows which use the link; determining a total bandwidth demand of the traffic flows using the link; and comparing the total bandwidth demand with a bandwidth capacity of the link. Determining when the event has occurred can include at least one of: receiving an alarm indicating a network fault; receiving a topology change indication from a node of the network.

Monitoring carrier ethernet networks

There is provided a method for optimizing the configuration of an optical network which is adapted to transport optical traffic along a path from a source node to a destination node, wherein the path can be routed via any one or more of a plurality of intermediate nodes in the optical network. The method comprises the steps of receiving an operating parameter of an optical device monitored in a plurality of nodes. The received operating parameter is compared with a threshold value. An operating status of a node is determined based on the comparison of the received operating parameter with the threshold value. The determined operating status of a node is used as a routing criteria for computing a path for routing traffic through the optical network.

Apparatus and method for optimizing the reconfiguration of an optical network

A network management system manages preplanned alternative paths in a wavelength switched optical network for a traffic flow having a working path and two or more preplanned alternative paths from a source node to a destination node. A processing part determines if, after the fault, a number of available alternative paths for the respective traffic flow drops to a threshold. If so, a new alternative path is calculated and set up the new alternative path in the nodes, to enable one or more of the nodes to move the traffic flow onto the new alternative path in the event of further faults without waiting for input from the network management system. Thus multiple faults can be handled without the nodes needing to store details of so many such alternative paths. Otherwise, many such alternative paths are needed to take account of many different possible failure locations.

Adding new alternative paths for restoration in WSON network

A network management node of a connection-oriented network listens to topology advertisements in a control plane of the network and stores information carried in the topology advertisements. The node selectively sends Link Management Protocol (LMP) requests based on the information carried in the topology advertisements. The LMP requests can be performed for at least one of the following events: adjacency addition; addition of a link between nodes; deletion of a link between nodes; modification to the bandwidth of a link between nodes. The information collected in the topology advertisements is translated into a format compatible with an Operations Support System (OSS) model.

Network management utilizing topology advertisements

The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for proving protection in a connection oriented packet switched communications network. Embodiments of the invention disclose detecting a fault in a path of the network, the path comprising at least one network resource, determining a new path for the traffic, restoring the traffic to the new path, and determining where the fault has occurred in the path using the management plane to correlate the fault with the at least one network resource using a configuration map of the network. The embodiments of the invention provide for dynamic protection using a management plane in the event of a failure in the network.
