A method of allocating resources in a first wireless system, wherein the first wireless system shares a frequency spectrum with a second wireless system, is described. The method comprises detecting a level of interference to the second wireless system caused by the first wireless system on a first frequency within the spectrum; determining if transmission on the first frequency should be restricted based on the level of interference; and restricting transmissions in the first system on the first frequency if it was determined that transmission on the first frequency should be restricted while allowing normal use of the remaining portions of the frequency spectrum to continue in the first system. A system for allocating resources in a first wireless system, wherein the first wireless system shares a frequency spectrum with a second wireless system, is also described.

Embodiments assign shared spectrum resources to access points. Embodiments group the access points into coexistence groups of access points, and generate a vertex graph including vertices that each represent one of the coexistence groups, where an edge connecting a pair of vertices in the vertex graph represents an overlap between coverage contours of a pair of coexistence groups represented by the pair of vertices, and the edge is assigned a weight that is proportional to the overlap as compared to other overlaps between coverage contours of other pairs of coexistence groups. Embodiments generate at least one vertex-colored graph by assigning a color to each vertex in the vertex graph, group the coexistence groups into groups of coexistence groups based on their corresponding assigned colors in the at least one vertex-colored graph, and map shared spectrum transmit frequencies to the groups of coexistence groups.

A system and method for adaptive control of an averaging parameter in a communications network may include an averaging parameter adaptive control module (APAC) that is associated with a base station and that includes one or more processors configured to generate a first averaging parameter that is transmitted by the base station to a mobile station communicating with the base station. The mobile station may use the first averaging parameter to generate first channel condition information that indicates a condition of a communication channel. First feedback information including the first channel condition information may be received at the base station. The APAC may generate a second averaging parameter using the first averaging parameter and the first feedback information and may transmit the second averaging parameter from the base station to the mobile station, thereby adaptively controlling the second averaging parameter based on the first feedback information.

Resource blocks in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network may be allocated by determining a maximum number of user equipments (UEs) in the LTE network that are permitted to transmit in a time period using a given resource block. In one or more embodiments, a system and method of managing network channel quality in a wireless communications network includes reporting a channel quality measurement from the particular user to a base station (BS) over an available CQICH, and determining a MCS based, at least in part, upon the channel quality measurement. If a threshold network CQICH capacity is reached during a subsequent data frame such that a CQICH is no longer available, MAC level messages are generated between the BS and the particular user to trigger reporting of signal quality information to the BS by the particular user. After the next CQICH cycle commences and if a CQICH is still unavailable, the signal quality information is continued to be provided via MAC level messages. Otherwise, a CQICH is reallocated for a particular user and channel quality measurement reporting is transitioned back to the CQICH.

Systems and methods for performing handover cancellation in a wireless communication system are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a mobile station requests bandwidth from a serving base station for the mobile station to send a handover cancellation request message to the serving base station. The mobile station then receives an allocation of the requested bandwidth from the serving base station, and sends the handover cancellation request message to the serving base station via the allocated bandwidth. The mobile station requests the bandwidth after a disconnect time and before a resource retain time.

A method of operating a communication system comprises sending a frame by an access node to a wireless device where the frame comprises a packet. A counter is initialized and a timer for each frame is initiated. The method continues with the access node determining if a response associated with the packet is received before the expiration of the timer. If the response is received prior to the expiration of the timer, the counter and the timer are reset. If a response is not received prior to the expiration of the timer, the counter is incremented. Upon the counter meeting a criteria of a certain quantity of lost packets, the access node performs a synchronization process.

Method and system for maintaining wireless links in a communication network

A method of operating a communication system comprises establishing a wireless device release time interval for a wireless device release timer at an access node upon establishing an initial network connection between a wireless device and the access node. An initial synchronization process is performed between the wireless device and the access node. The method continues with the access node sending an unsolicited synchronization message to the wireless device and starting the wireless device release timer. A second synchronization process is performed and upon successful completion of the second synchronization process, a success status synchronization response message is sent by the access node to the wireless device. The access node receives a synchronization confirmation message from the wireless device that comprises an identifier corresponding to the identity of the wireless device and upon receiving the confirmation message, the access node cancels the wireless device release timer.

In various embodiments, a system and method for providing uplink (UL) power control for a wireless mobile station (MS) includes, after transmission of an unanswered bandwidth request by the MS, incrementally boosting an UL transmit power of one or more subsequent bandwidth requests by the MS to a boosted UL power level at which UL bandwidth is allocated to the MS by the BS; selectively reporting the boosted UL power level to the BS immediately after the UL transmit power has been boosted; and selectively controlling the boosted UL power level by the BS responsive to the boosted UL power level reported to the BS. A MS is configured to carry out the UL power control method and a BS is configured to generate MS UL power control commands based, at least in part, upon the UL power level reported to the BS.

A method for varying pilot sub-carrier density in OFDMA communications is described. The method comprises calculating channel quality from sub-carriers; determining whether the channel quality is outside a threshold range; selecting a different pilot sub-carrier density for a sub-zone based on the value of the channel quality when the channel quality is outside the threshold range; and setting the sub-zone to the different pilot sub-carrier density. A system for using sub-zones with different pilot sub-carrier densities in OFDMA communications is also described.
