A signal transmission circuit is formed by a transmitter, a receiver, a transmission line therebetween, and a bias circuit. The transmitter receives an input signal to transmit a signal corresponding to the input signal to the input of the transmission line. A voltage amplitude of the transmitted signal is smaller than a voltage amplitude defined by first and second power supply terminals. Simple signal transmission circuit capable of decreasing power consumption

A display device is provided with a display controller, a source driver, and a liquid crystal panel, and two pairs of wirings are provided between the display controller and the source driver. The display controller is provided with a V-I conversion circuit for image data and a mode register, and the source driver is provided with an I-V conversion circuit for image data. The V-I conversion circuit for image data connects either one of a pair of the wirings to an earth electrode and sets the other one to a floating state based on the image data. The I-V conversion circuit for image data allows electric current to flow in the wiring out of a pair of the wirings, which is connected to the earth electrode, and converts the image data into a pair of complementary current signals to receive them. Further, the I-V conversion circuit for image data stops the current signal by a control signal from the mode register when the image data is not transmitted.

An interface circuit includes a signal sending section having a first MOS transistor and a second MOS transistor which are alternately turned ON in accordance with a binary input signal. A receiver circuit in a communication system receives a complementary potential signal having a ground level or a floating level from a transmitter circuit through a pair of transmission lines. The receiver circuit includes first and second switching transistors for supplying a complementary current signal based on the complementary potential signal, a current detection transistor for detecting the current flowing through the switching transistors, and a potential control unit for controlling the gate potentials of the switching transistors based on the detected current for implementing a negative feedback loop. The negative feedback loop compensates the influence by a fluctuation of the potential of the transmitter circuit or the receiver circuit.

There is provided a mode-locked semiconductor laser including a saturable absorber section, a gain section having the same composition as that of the saturable absorber section, a non-absorptive waveguide section having an absorption edge wavelength shorter than an oscillation wavelength of the gain section, an electroabsorption modulator section having an absorption edge wavelength intermediate between an oscillation wavelength of the gain section and an absorption edge wavelength of the non-absorptive waveguide section, and a distributed Bragg reflector section having the same composition as that of the non-absorptive waveguide section and including a diffraction grating. These five sections are optically coupled to one another in a single waveguide. First to n-th single-axial-mode LDs are arranged on a semiconductor substrate, where n.gtoreq.2. Each of the first to n-th LDs has a stripe-shaped semiconductor active layer formed on or over the substrate, a stripe-shaped semiconductor guiding layer formed on one side of the active layer, and a stripe-shaped semiconductor cladding layer formed on the other side of the active layer. The guiding layers of the first to n-th LDs have first to n-th diffraction gratings, respectively. The (k+1)-th period is equal to a sum of the k-th period and an increment, where 1.ltoreq.k S (n-1). The active layers of the first to n-th LDs have first to n-th gain peak wavelengths, respectively. The (k+1)-th gain peak wavelength is equal to a sum of the k-th gain peak wavelength and an increment. The first to n-th LDs have first to n-th oscillation wavelengths with first to n-th wavelength differences from the first to n-th gain peak wavelengths, respectively. The first to n-th wavelength differences are within a specific acceptable range for low threshold currents and low wavelength chirping. The lasing characteristic fluctuation is limited within the acceptable range independent of an oscillation wavelength span of the LDs.

An optical semiconductor device comprises a stripe-mesa structure provided on a semi-insulating substrate. The stripe-mesa structure comprises an undoped light absorption layer sandwiched by cladding layers, and by burying layers on both sides. With this structure, the device capacitance is decreased to provide wide bandwidth and ultra-high speed operation properties. This device can be applied to an optical modulator, an integrated type optical modulator, and an optical detector.
