A white X-ray generating means and an X-ray detecting means are respectively moved to a first position and a second position that are separated, X-ray intensities, for each energy, detected at respective positions by the X-ray detecting means are obtained as first data and second data, a third data, that is refraction-X-ray-only data, is obtained based on the difference between the first data and the second data, and data about fluorescent X-ray is obtained from the difference between the first or second data and the third data.

Energy dispersion type X-ray diffraction/spectral device

A photoelectron counter in an open detection chamber in which photoelectrons emitted from a solid surface by a photon irradiation energy are counted, is arranged so as to suppress background noise which produces a false count rate due to photoelectrons which are emitted from solid surfaces outside the subject when scattered rays have reached and irradiated the same surface. The counter uses one or more of options including a film or coating formed with a thickness which is less than several .mu.m thickness on parts which are subject to scattered rays incident from the subject, a ray screen for interrupting scattered rays from entering into the detection chamber and/or a center guard provided at the front part of the detector to enable nearby measurement and while interrupting scattered rays.

Open counter for low energy electron detection with suppressed

An apparatus capable of detecting the low-speed electrons (photo-electrons, exo-electrons) emitted from an object with increased accuracy, regardless of the condition of operating environment is disclosed. The apparatus consists in the main of a bell-shaped cathode opened to the atmosphere at the bottom thereof, and an anode supported within the cathode. The anode is supplied with a high voltage enough to induce a gaseous discharge upon the entrance of the low-speed electrons into the cathode, and the number of pulses generated by the anode as a result of this gaseous discharge is counted. Also, a sensor is provided to detect the condition of the operating environment and outputs a signal indicative of the condition. This signal is used to adjust the condition for gaseous discharge across the anode and the cathode to thereby maintain a constant counting rate.
