Butenoic acid derivatives and use as herbicides

A method for controlling the growth of undesired weeds is disclosed. The method includes applying a herbicidally effect amount of a herbicidal composition which contains as an essential active ingredient a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is a hydroxyl group or a hydroxylamino group, R is a hydrogen atom, an inorganic counter cation, an an organic counter cation or an ester residue, and n is an integar of 1 to 3, and an inert carrier or diluent, to the area where the weeds grow or will grow.

A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkenyloxy group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkynyloxy group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio group, a dichlorocyclopropylmethoxy group or a methyldichlorocyclopropylmethoxy group, X is a chlorine atom or a bromine atom and Y is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom, which is useful as a herbicide.
