A high strength chromium containing steel sheet having a tensile strength of at least 40 kgf/mm.sup.2, and excellent in corrosion resistance and workability, comprising, by weight, C:up to 0.030%, Si:up to 2.30%, Mn:up to 3.0%, P:more than 0.0005% and not more than 0.150%, S:up to 0.010%, Ni:up to 2.0%, Cu:more than 0% and not more than 2.0%, Cr:not less than 5.0% and less than 10.0%, N:up to 0.030%, V:not less than 0.01% and not more than 0.10%, and optionally at least one of 0.01 to 0.30% of Ti, 0.01 to 0.30% of Nb, 0.01 to 0.30% of Zr, 0.01 to 0.20% of Al and 0.0002 to 0.0200% of B, the amounts of Si, Mn, P, Ni and Cu being adjusted so that the relation:Si+Mn+10P+Ni+Cu&gt;1.0% may be satisfied, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities.

A chromium containing steel sheet excellent in corrosion resistance and workability, comprising, by weight, C:up to 0.030%, Si:up to 0.5%, Mn:up to 0.5%, P:up to 0.040%, S:up to 0.010%, Ni:up to 0.3%, Cu:up to 0.3%, Cr: not less than 5.0% and less than 11.0%, N:up to 0.030%, V:not less than 0.01% and not more than 0.10%, and optionally at least one of 0.01 to 0.30% of Ti, 0.01 to 0.30% of Nb, 0.01 to 0.30% of Zr, 0.01 to 0.20% of Al and 0.0002 to 0.0200% of B, the amounts of Si, Mn, P, Ni and Cu being adjusted so that the relation:Si+Mn+10P+Ni+Cu.ltoreq.1.0% may be satisfied, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities.

Stainless steel sheets are plated with zinc and further phosphated so as to have chromaticness indices of L=45-53, a=0.0-0.4 and b=1.3-4.4. Thus treated stainless steel sheets have sufficient strength, excellent corrosion resistance and a color well harmonizing with other building materials and environment and do not suffer from color change for a prolonged period of time.

An austenitic stainless steel substantially comprising not more than 0.15% by weight of C, 2.56 - 4.0% by weight of Si, not more than 2.0% by weight of Mn, 8 - 22% by weight of Ni, 16 - 25% by weight of Cr, 0.001 - 0.05% by weight of at least one alkaline earth metal, 0 - 2.5% by weight of Al, 0 - 0.1% by weight of at least one rare earth metal, 0 - 1.0% by weight of at least one of Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr and Hf, 0 - 2.0% by weight of Cu and balance Fe is disclosed. This class of steels are superior to the known high Si oxidation-resisting austenitic stainless steels in oxidation resistance especially in resistance to scaling, are of the same level in high temperature strength, and are much less expensive.

An austenitic stainless steel comprising not more than 0.15% by weight of C, 1.5 - 4.0% by weight of Si, not more than 2% by weight of Mn, 17.0 - 30.0% by weight of Ni, 24.0 - 32.0% by weight of Cr, 0.5 - 2.5% by weight of Al, 0.001 - 0.100% by weight of Ca, 0.001 - 0.100% by weight of at least one rare earth metal, 0 - 1.0% by weight of at least one of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta, and balance Fe and incidental impurities is disclosed. Steels of this class are superior to the known high Si oxidation-resisting austenitic stainless steels in scaling and nitriding resistance and with stand prolonged use under the circumstances where the steels undergo cyclic heating to high temperatures.
