Provided is an optical waveguide device capable of reducing stress that occurs inside an optical waveguide substrate due to a difference in a coefficient of thermal expansion. The optical waveguide device () includes an optical waveguide substrate () having a thickness of 30 &#x3bc;m or less, and a liquid crystal polymer substrate () which holds the optical waveguide substrate () and has permittivity lower than that of the optical waveguide substrate (). The optical waveguide substrate () and the liquid crystal polymer substrate () are bonded to each other by an adhesive layer (). Coefficients of thermal expansion of the optical waveguide substrate () and the liquid crystal polymer substrate () have anisotropy in each substrate plane, and a relative direction between the optical waveguide substrate () and the liquid crystal polymer substrate () is adjusted in such a manner that anisotropic axial directions of the optical waveguide substrate () and anisotropic axial directions the liquid crystal polymer substrate () are aligned.

Optical control element having a plurality of optical control portions

A light control device with a reduced electric loss is provided which can suppress a phenomenon of electrically reflecting a high-frequency signal even when it employs a dielectric anisotropic substrate. A light control device includes a signal electrode formed on a dielectric anisotropic substrate and ground electrodes disposed with the signal electrode interposed therebetween. Here, the signal electrode includes at least two signal electrode portions disposed in directions in which the dielectric constant of the substrate is different from each other and a curved connecting portion connecting the at least two signal electrode portions. The connecting portion is configured so that the characteristic impedance in parts connected to the at least two signal electrode portions is equal to that of the corresponding signal electrode portion, and the characteristic impedance in the connecting portion between the at least two signal electrode portions continuously varies.

Light control device

It is intended to suppress the influence of a photorefractive phenomenon or the coupling of stray light to signal light. A Mach-Zehnder waveguide type optical modulator is provided which includes a thin platewith a thickness of 20 &#x3bc;m or less formed of a material having an electro-optical effect, an optical waveguideformed on a front surface or a rear surface of the thin plate, and a modulation electrode modulating light passing through the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide includes an input optical waveguide, branched optical waveguidesto, and an output optical waveguide. The branched optical waveguide includes an input branching portion (region B) in which the input optical waveguide is branched into a plurality of optical waveguides, an output merging portion (region D) in which the plurality of optical waveguides connected to the output optical waveguide are merged, and a parallel portion (region C) formed between the input branching portion and the output merging portion. At least one of the input branching portion and the output merging portion has a ratio l/d of a length l along a symmetry axis of the branched optical waveguides to a gap d of the optical waveguide in the parallel portion in the range of 33 to 100.

Mach-zehnder waveguide type optical modulator

The present invention relates to an optical control device capable of achieving an accurate match of modulation timing and modulation intensity between optical waves propagating through optical waveguides disposed between a plurality of signal electrodes in an optical control device using an anisotropic dielectric substrate.

Optical modulator

An optical modulator using a thin plate capable of improving an S/N ratio of an output light is provided. The optical modulator including a thin platehaving an electrooptic effect and having a thickness of 20 &#x3bc;m or less, an optical waveguideformed on a top or bottom surface of the thin plate, and a modulation electrode formed on the top surface of the thin plate to modulate light passing through the optical waveguide, wherein a stray light removing memberis disposed within the thin plate or in a vicinity of the thin plate.
