A magnetic recording and reproducing device includes a magnetic recording medium including a protective layer that is exposed to an enclosed interior volume of the magnetic recording and reproducing device, which contains oxygen and helium, a magnetic head including a heat assist element that is also exposed to the enclosed interior volume, the magnetic head configured to record data onto the magnetic recording medium, and an oxygen amount measurement unit configured to measure an oxygen amount in the enclosed interior volume.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic head includes a magnetic pole having a first surface, a first shield separated from the magnetic pole along the first surface, and a stacked body provided between the magnetic pole and the first shield. The stacked body includes a magnetic layer, and first and second conductive layers. The magnetic layer includes at least one selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co, and Ni. The first conductive layer contacts the magnetic pole and the magnetic layer, and is provided between the magnetic pole and the magnetic layer. The second conductive layer contacts the magnetic layer and the first shield, is provided between the magnetic layer and the first shield. The first shield has a first shield surface contacting the second conductive layer. A ratio of a length of the magnetic layer to a length of the first shield surface is 0.1 or more.

A thickness of the third junction is smaller than that of the first junction.

The temperature control element unit includes a first electrode on a leading side of the main pole and on both sides of a track of the main pole, a second electrode on the leading side of the main pole and on a track center of the main pole, an N-type semiconductor and a P-type semiconductor connected to the first and second electrodes, and a wiring portion which applies a current via the second electrode, N-type semiconductor, first electrode, P-type semiconductor, and second electrode. The first and second electrodes form a heat absorbing portion and a heat radiating portion.

The trailing core includes a return pole opposed to a trailing side of the main pole with a write gap therebetween, and side shields arranged individually on opposite sides of the main pole transversely relative to tracks and magnetically separated from the main pole at a distance not more than double a track pitch of the recording medium. The leading core includes a junction opposed to a leading side of the main pole with a gap therebetween and joined to the side shields with a width of 20 &#x3bc;m or less transversely relative to the tracks and a connecting portion joined to the main pole in a position off the recording medium.
