A catalyst for producing alkylene oxide including fine metal silver particles dispersed and supported on a carrier, wherein not less than 90% of the fine metal silver particles have silver particle diameters of 2 to 100 nm, is disclosed. The catalyst can be produced by impregnating a carrier with a liquid containing a silver compound or a silver ion; drying the carrier; and then irradiating the carrier with microwave to form fine metal silver particles in dispersed state on the carrier. This catalyst is used for producing olefin oxide by contact gas-phase oxidation of olefin by a molecular-oxygen-containing gas.

A catalyst that enables to produce ethylene oxide in a high selectivity and a method for the production of ethylene oxide using the catalyst are provided. In the catalyst for the production of ethylene oxide, wherein the catalyst component is supported by a carrier, a carrier containing &#x3b1;-alumina as the main component which has at least two peaks in the range of pore diameter of 0.01-100 &#x3bc;m and at least one peak of the above peaks is present in the range of pore diameter of 0.01-1.0 &#x3bc;m in the pore distribution measured by mercury porosimetry is adopted as said carrier.

It provide a catalyst for the production of epoxides by a vapor-phase oxidation of an unsaturated hydrocarbon having a chain length of 4-20 carbon atoms and containing no allylic hydrogen atom, characterized by having a catalytic component containing silver and at least one element selected from the group consisting of alkali metals and thallium deposited onto a carrier obtained by mixing &agr;-alumina having a sodium content in the range of 1-70 mmol (as reduced to Na) per kg of &agr;-alumina with an aluminium compound, a silicon compound, and a sodium compound and calcining the resultant mixture, the carrier having a silicon content (as reduced to SiO ) in the range of 0.3 -11.5 mass % based on the mass of the carrier and a sodium content (as reduced to Na O) in the range of 0.11-2.5 mass % based on the mass of the carrier.
