A shadow mask is arranged to face a phosphor screen formed on an inner surface of a panel. A plurality of aperture columns are formed in parallel in the shadow mask. Each aperture column includes a plurality of apertures arranged in line at a predetermined interval. On both sides of each aperture column on the surface of the shadow mask facing the electron gun, stripe-shaped dielectric layers for acting on electron beams toward the apertures are formed respectively, and extend in substantial parallel with the aperture columns. The shadow mask is manufactured in such a manner that stripe-shaped insulating material layers are formed on the surface of a mask base material facing the electron gun, the mask base material is thereafter shaped into a predetermined shape, and the insulating material layers on the shaped mask are sintered.

A deflection yoke on a yoke mounting portion with a truncated pyramid shape has a pair of saddle-type horizontal deflecting coils that is located symmetrically with a central axis and has a truncated pyramid shape. A core with a truncated cone shape is coaxially located on the outer periphery of the horizontal deflecting coils. A pair of vertical deflecting coils are toroidally wound around the core. If the positions of a horizontal axis and a vertical axis are given by 0&#xb0; and 90&#xb0;, respectively, in the circumference direction around the central axis, the winding of one vertical deflecting coil has a starting point on the horizontal-axis side within the range of 5&#xb0;-30&#xb0; and is distributed from the starting point to 90&#xb0; and wound symmetrically with the vertical axis. The windings of the vertical deflecting coils are wound symmetrically with the horizontal axis.

An electron gun assembly of a color cathode ray tube emits at least one electron beam having an oblong cross-sectional shape extending substantially in the horizontal direction, and emits three electron beams in a substantially non-convergent state toward the central portion of a phosphor screen. A deflection device comprises an auxiliary magnetic field generator for generating a quadrupole magnetic field component which focuses the electron beam with an oblong cross section more heavily in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction. The auxiliary magnetic field generator is located in a given region in a tube-axis direction in which the horizontally deflecting coil is located.

A shadow mask includes a shadow mask body opposed to a phosphor screen, and its peripheral portion is fixed to a mask frame. The shadow mask body includes a rectangular effective portion that is formed having a large number of electron beam passage apertures. The effective portion has a major axis and a minor axis that pass through its center and extends at right angles to each other. The shadow mask comprises an auxiliary mask fixed to a region that contains the minor axis of the effective portion of the shadow mask body. The auxiliary mask is in the form of a strip that extends long in the direction of the minor axis and has a large number of electron beam passage apertures that communicate individually with the electron beam passage apertures of the effective portion.

A deflection yoke of a cathode ray tube apparatus comprises a pair of saddle-type horizontal deflection coils located symmetrically with respect to a central axis and substantially in the shape of a truncated pyramid. A magnetic core substantially in the shape of a truncated cone is located coaxially around the horizontal deflection coils, and a pair of vertical deflection coils are wound on the magnetic core. A relation between a space vf between a large-diameter end portion of the magnetic core and each of the horizontal deflection coils and a space vr between a small-diameter end portion of the magnetic core and each of the horizontal deflection coils, with respect to the direction of a vertical axis perpendicular to the central axis, is given by vf&gE;vr.

A shadow body includes an effective area having minor and major axes that extend perpendicularly to each other. Each of electron beam passage apertures formed in the effective area is a communication hole that connects a larger hole opening in one surface of the effective area and a smaller hole opening in the other surface of the effective area. A joint portion between the larger and smaller holes of each electron beam passage apertures in the central portion of the effective area is situated in the thickness-direction central portion of the mask body. A joint portion between the larger and smaller holes of each electron beam passage aperture in the peripheral portion of the effective area is situated closer to the one surface side of the effective area than the thickness-direction central portion is, the larger hole being offset against the smaller hole in the direction of the major axis.

A shadow mask includes a substantially rectangular effective region formed having a number of electron beam passage apertures and opposed to a phosphor screen and a substantially rectangular skirt portion provided around the effective region and extending in the direction of a tube axis. The skirt portion has a pair of long sides extending substantially parallel to a major axis and a pair of short sides extending substantially parallel to a minor axis, the long and short sides being welded to the inner surface of a substantially rectangular mask frame. A distance a from an extending end of the skirt portion on each long side to the weld spot is longer than a distance b from an extending end of the skirt portion on each short side to the weld spot.

A panel is provided with a substantially rectangular effective portion that has a substantially flat outer surface, and a phosphor screen is formed on the inner surface of the effective portion. A shadow mask that is opposed to the phosphor screen includes a substantially rectangular mask body formed having a large number of electron beam holes and a mask frame supporting the peripheral edge portion of the mask body. The interval between the electron beam holes in the direction of the major axis of the mask body increases from the center of the mask body toward the major axis end so that the rate of change of the interval has a maximum value in the region between the center of the mask body and the major axis end.

An inner surface of the panel is formed to satisfy at least one of the following relationships: ZPH/LPH&lE;0.0050, and ZPV/LPV&lE;0.050 where LPH represents a distance from a center of the effective section to a long axis end of the effective section. LPV represents a distance from the center to a short axis end of the effective section, ZPH represents a fall of the effective section at the long axis end along the tube axis, and ZPV presents a fall of the effective section at the short axis end along the axis of the tube axis. At least one of each long side and each short side of a mask surface is curved such that a central portion thereof projects outwardly, and satisfies at least corresponding one of the following relationships: YML/LML&lE;0.015, and XMS/LMS&lE;0.015 where LML represents a distance from the short axis to each corner of an effective portion of the mask surface, LMS represents a distance from the long axis to each corner of the effective portion, YML represents a fall, along the short axis, between a point of each long side on the short axis and a corner of the long side, and XMS represents a fall, along the long axis, between a point of each short side on the long axis and a corner of the short side.

A color picture tube includes a panel of which substantially rectangular effective area has a flat external surface and a curved internal surface, and on the internal surface of the effective area thereof a phosphor screen is formed. The internal surface of the effective area of the panel, when an average radius of curvature in major axis direction is RH, an average radius of curvature in minor axis direction is RV, an average radius of curvature in long side direction is RL and an average radius of curvature in short side direction is RS, is formed in a curved face satisfying RH>RV and RS&gE;RV, or RH>RV and RS&gE;RV and RL&gE;RH. In this color picture tube, flatness of the effective area of the panel and visibility are improved.

A skirt portion of a mask body includes cut portions. The width of the cut portions along the minor or major axis ranges from 0.10&times;L to 0.45&times;L, where L is the distance from an end of the minor or major axis to a diagonal end, and the height of the cut portions along the tube axis is equal to 5% to 40% of the height of the skirt portion along the tube axis in a region near the minor or major axis.
