A triazine compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein Y.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and Z is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, X.sup.1 is a halogen atom and R is a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group. The triazine compound is useful as a herbicide for combatting weeds.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of a biguanide derivative useful as an intermediate for triazine-type herbicides, in which the biguanide derivative can be produced at high yields by reacting a phenoxyalkylamine salt with dicyandiamide in a solvent containing a paraffinic hydrocarbon having 8 to 15 carbon atoms, or by reacting a free phenoxylakylamine with a hydrogen halide in a solvent containing a paraffinic hydrocarbon having 8 to 15 carbon atoms and reacting the resultant a phenoxyalkylamine salt with dicyandiamide in the same solvent without isolating the phenoxyalkylamine salt.

Process for producing biguanide derivative

Imidazoline derivatives represented by the general formula: ##STR1## (wherein all the symbols are as defined in appended claims), a process for preparation of said derivatives, and a herbicide or a plant growth regulator containing said derivative as an active component are described. These derivatives are novel compounds, and the herbicide containing said derivative as an active component exhibits excellent herbicidal activity against various weeds without phytotoxicity on useful agricultural products. The plant growth regulator containing said derivatives as an active component exhibits excellent growth regulating activity against turf etc. without phytotoxicity thereon.
