A canister includes a casing, a fuel reserve well defined at the bottom of the casing, an adsorbent layer provided in the casing for adsorbing fuel vapor, the adsorbent layer communicating with the fuel reserve well at a region of its lower portion and communicating with an atmosphere at its upper portion, a first communication passage defined so that the fuel reserve well communicates with a fuel system of an engine, and a second communication passage defined so that the fuel reserve well communicates with an intake system o f the engine. The second communication passage includes a purge chamber communicating with a region of the adsorbent layer other than the region of the adsorbent layer with which the fuel reserve well communicates, a first fuel outflow passage having a liquid fuel suction port open to the bottom of the fuel reserve well at its lower portion and a nozzle opening positioned in the purge chamber at its upper portion, and a second fuel outflow passage defined over the nozzle opening of the first fuel outflow passage for providing a fuel flow passage extending from the purge chamber to the suction system of the engine.

Canister

An abnormality detection system is provided, which detects abnormality in an evaporative fuel control system for an internal combustion engine. A plurality of temperature sensors are arranged in an evaporative fuel storage device at different locations for detecting the temperature of an adsorbent or in the vicinity thereof within the storage device at the different locations. An ECU controls at least one of charging of evaporative fuel from the fuel tank to the storage device and purging of evaporative fuel from the storage device to the intake system of the engine. The ECU determines the presence or absence of an abnormality in the evaporative fuel control system, based upon output values from the temperature sensors assumed when the control system is operative. A state in which adsorption of evaporative fuel generated in the fuel tank to the adsorbent of the storage device has been completed is detected, based upon the amount of a rise in temperature detected while the charging is being effected. The ECU effects the abnormality determination after the state has been detected. The system may be applied to an internal combustion engine in which the air-fuel ratio is controlled by the use of an air-fuel ratio correction coefficient determined in response to an output from an air-fuel ratio sensor.

A fuel storage canister includes a fuel storage chamber defined in a housing and connected to a fuel tank, a first activated carbon layer disposed in said housing for adsorbing fuel vapor, a first passageway connected to said housing for venting said fuel storage chamber through said first activated carbon layer to the atmosphere, a second activated carbon layer disposed in said housing for adsorbing fuel vapor, and a second passageway connected to said housing for venting said fuel storage chamber through said first and second activated carbon layers to the atmosphere. A directional control valve is connected to said first and second passageways for selectively opening said first and second passageways depending on an operating condition of the engine. When the engine is out of operation, requiring a large amount of fuel vapor to be stored in the canister, the fuel storage chamber is vented to the atmosphere through the first and second activated carbon layers by the second passageway for thereby adsorbing the fuel vapor with the first and the second activated carbon layers. When the engine is in operation, the fuel storage chamber is vented to the atmosphere through only the first activated carbon layer by the first passageway for thereby adsorbing the fuel vapor with the first activated carbon layer, with no fuel vapor adsorbed by the second activated carbon layer.
