The invention provides a process using olefin polymerization catalysts exhibiting excellent polymerization activities. The olefin polymerization catalysts of the invention contain a transition metal compound typified by formula (I) and at least one of an organometallic compound, an organoaluminum oxy-compound or a compound which reacts with said transition metal compound to form an ion pair. The process using the inventive catalysts is useful in producing &#x3b1;-olefin/conjugated diene copolymers having specific properties

An olefin polymerization catalyst having a high polymerization activity at high temperatures and a process for olefin polymerization using the catalyst are disclosed. A process for polymerizing propylene utilizes a metallocene catalyst component of the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein M is a transition metal, R.sup.1 is a C.sub.2-6 hydrocarbon, R.sup.2 is a C.sub.6-16 aryl group, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are each a halogen atom and Y is a divalent hydrocarbon or a divalent silicon-containing group. Propylene polymers produced thereby have such properties that the triad tacticity of propylene units is high, the proportion of inversely inserted units based on the 2,1-insertion of propylene monomer is in a specific range and the intrinsic viscosity (.eta.), as measured in decahydronaphthalene at 135.degree. C., is in a specific range.

Process for polymerizing propylene by using a novel metallocene catalyst

The novel transition metal compound of the invention is represented by the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein M is a transition metal; R.sup.1 is a hydrocarbon group of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is an aryl group of 6 to 16 carbon atoms; X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are each a halogen atom or the like; and Y is a divalent hydrocarbon group, a divalent silicon-containing group or the like. The propylene homopolymer, the propylene copolymer and the propylene elastomer according to the present invention have such properties that the triad tacticity of propylene units chain is high, a proportion of the inversely units based on the 2,1-insertion of propylene monomer is in the specific range, and the intrinsic viscosity [.eta.], as measured in decahydronaphthalene at 135.degree. C., is in the specific range.

The novel transition metal catalyst of the invention is represented by the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein M is a zirconium or hafnium; R.sup.1 is a hydrocarbon group of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 is an aryl group of 6 to 16 carbon atoms; X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 are each a halogen atom; and Y is a divalent hydrocarbon group, a divalent silicon-containing group.

Disclosed is a process for preparing a cyclopentadienyl group-containing silicon compound or a cyclopentadienyl group-containing germanium compound, comprising reacting (i) a lithium, sodium or potassium salt of a cyclopentadiene derivative with (ii) a silicon halide compound or a germanium halide compound in the presence of a cyanide or a thiocyanate. The cyanide or the thiocyanate is preferably a copper salt. According to the process of the invention, a cyclopentadienyl group-containing silicon compound or a cyclopentadienyl group-containing germanium compound, which is very useful for the preparation of a metallocene complex catalyst component, can be prepared in a high yield for a short period of time.
