A PDP () with a reduced discharge inception voltage and discharge sustaining voltage for improving luminous efficiency has at least a pair of substrates (and) that are disposed in opposition to sandwich a discharge space therebetween. At least a portion of at least one of the substrates has two or more display electrode pairs () that include narrow bus electrodes (and), a dielectric layer () formed so as to cover the display electrode pairs (), and a protective layer () formed so as to cover the dielectric layer (). The dielectric layer () has a dense film structure with a dielectric breakdown voltage of 1.0&#xd7;10[V/cm] to 1.0&#xd7;10[V/cm].

Plasma display panel

A plasma display panel in which a first substrate having a protective layer formed thereon opposes a second substrate across a discharge space, with the substrates being sealed around a perimeter thereof. At a surface of the protective layer, first and second materials of different electron emission properties are exposed to the discharge space, with at least one of the materials existing in a dispersed state. The first and second materials may be first and second crystals, and the second crystal may be dispersed throughout the first crystal.

The first protective film has a larger impurity content than the second protective film.

A technology effective for improving the luminous efficiency, lifetime, and color temperature of a PDP having phosphor layers of three colors is disclosed. A PDP comprises a plurality of narrow tubes () arrayed on a substrate (). In each narrow tube (), one of phosphor layers (R;B,G) is formed and a discharge gas is contained. The compositions and pressures of the discharge gases are set within appropriate ranges respectively corresponding to the phosphor layers (R,B,G). Consequently, the PDP can have a lengthened life-time and an improved luminous efficiency. Reductions of variation in breakdown voltage and adjustment of color temperature are also possible with this constitution.

The present invention aims to provide a PDP apparatus and a driving method for the same which can improve display quality by reducing a peak value of a discharge current flowing in scan and sustain electrodes in a sustain period, without an increase in manufacturing cost. This is achieved as follows. A driving unitapplies a sustain data pulseto a plurality of third electrodes in a sustain period T. Here, a voltage waveform of the sustain data pulsestarts to rise after a voltage of each of pulsesandapplied to a pair of a scan electrode SCN and a sustain electrode SUS reaches a predetermined level. Furthermore, the sustain data pulserises at a different timing at least from a sustain data pulseapplied to an adjacent data electrode.

In the plasma display panel of the present invention, a protective layer covers a dielectric layer covering electrodes in discharge cells and faces a discharge space filled with a discharge gas. Here, the discharge gas includes at least one selected from the group consisting of Xe and Kr. In the protective layer, an electron band including at least electrons having energy level of 4 eV or less below a vacuum level is formed within a forbidden band in energy bands.

A plasma display panel having a dielectric protection layer () including MgO and phosphorlayers (R,G,B) for red, green, and blue respectively wherein none of the phosphor layers contain any member of the group consisting of Group IV elements, transition metals, alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals, or wherein all the phosphor layers each contain a specific amount of one or more members of the group consisting of Group IV group elements, transition metals, alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. In such a plasma display panel, changes over the course of time in the impedance of the dielectric protection layer () is suppressed, and the phosphor layers are uniform with respect to the directional characteristics of the changes of the impedances, which results in suppression of occurrence of black noise.

A plasma display panel is composed of a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other via a discharge space and sealed together. A protective layer on the first substrate is composed principally of magnesium oxide, includes a substance or structure that creates a first energy level in an area of a forbidden band, the area being in a vicinity of a conduction band, and includes a substance or structure that creates a second energy level in another area in the forbidden band, the other area being in a vicinity of a valence band. During driving the second energy level is occupied by electrons, and few electrons exist in the first energy level, or electrons can easily occupy the first energy level due to a minus charge state, and MgO insultaive resistance is not lowered. This maintains wall charge retention and reduces discharge irregularities and firing voltage Vf.

Plasma display panel manufacturing method for improving discharge characteristics

Provided is a gas discharge display panel that exhibits a favorable display performance by maintaining a wall charge retaining power, controlling discharge delay within a range adequate for optimal image display, and reducing the discharge starting voltage at comparatively low cost. Also provided is a PDP that exhibits more reliability with enhanced display quality by further improving the secondary electron emission factor &#x3b3; compared to conventional cases and lowering the discharge starting voltage to widen the driving margin. In addition, provided is a manufacturing method of a gas discharge display panel, by which the manufacturing cost lowers by reduction of the exhaustion time in the sealing exhaustion process, and by which the driving circuit cost is reduced. In the present invention, the protective layer contains, with respect to a MgO content of the protective layer, Si in a range of 20 mass ppm to 5000 mass ppm inclusive and H in a range of 300 mass ppm to 10000 mass ppm inclusive.

The present invention aims at realizing a PDP and a mercury-free fluorescent lamp feasible to maintain excellent luminescent characteristics over long periods by suppressing time-lapse changes in luminescent characteristics of a phosphor that is excited by vacuum ultraviolet light to thereby emit light. To accomplish this object, the oxide phosphor of the invention comprises individual particles, each of which has a region at and near the surface thereof modified, and the elemental composition of the surface region is in a more oxidized state than that of the internal region of the particles. Alternatively, the surface region has more halogen or chalcogen in the elemental composition. In the phosphor treatment method of the invention, the surface region of individual phosphor particles is selectively modified by (i) forming a highly reactive gas atmosphere by exciting gas which contains reactive gas, and (ii) exposing the phosphor to the gas atmosphere.

According to a flexible thin film capacitor of the present invention, an adhesive film is formed on a substrate composed of at least one selected from the group consisting of an organic polymer and a metal foil, and an inorganic high dielectric film and metal electrode films are formed thereon. A metal oxide adhesive film can be used as the adhesive film. The adhesive film is formed in contact with the inorganic high dielectric film and at least one of the metal electrode films.

Flexible thin film capacitor and method for producing the same

A Pt/Ti film is formed on a substrate, and the Pt/Ti film is patterned in to a bottom electrode. Subsequently, a SrTiO film, that is, a dielectric film, is formed on the substrate by sputtering using a mixture of an Ar gas, an O gas and a N gas as a film forming gas. The SrTiO film is patterned into a capacitor dielectric film formed on the bottom electrode. A top electrode is then formed on the capacitor dielectric film. Since a N gas is used as the film forming gas in addition to an Ar/O gas, a SrTiO film with a high dielectric constant and small leakage can be formed at a low temperature. By using this SrTiO film, a thin film capacitor with high capacitance and good dielectric characteristics can be obtained.
