The present invention is a method to accelerate the frame/field decision by estimating more suitable structure using SAD (sum of absolute difference) between picture samples and their mean. Next the uses the correlation observed between the optimal macroblock prediction modes found with the inferred structure and the probability of the non-inferred structure being better than the inferred one. The invention can lead to the significant reduction of the computational complexity at the cost of slight degradation of coding efficiency.

Fast macroblock structure decision using SAD discrepancy and its prediction mode

A video processing method for detecting significant events from a video program includes computing short-time sub-band energies in the audio for plural audio sub-bands, detecting scene boundaries where a weighted sum of these short-time sub-band energies are less energy threshold for longer than an time interval, segmenting the video program into a plurality of scenes by the boundaries, removing scenes shorter than a segment time interval and classifying and ranking the remaining scenes by audio. A second segmenting and removal is based upon a second energy threshold and a second time interval or when energy in a lowest frequency sub-band is greater than a predetermined bass energy threshold. The first segment time interval may be recomputed based upon the distribution of length of the remaining scenes.

Low complexity event detection for video programs

The video encoding rate control with the quantization parameter for basic units of macroblocks of a picture adapting to deviation from the average quantization parameter over pictures of the same type (i.e., I-pictures, P-pictures, and B-pictures).

Video compression rate

The latest video-coding standards achieve higher coding efficiency than the previous video standards, while increasing the complexity and the difficulty of encoding. In a skip macroblock prediction mode some coding parameters (such as motion vectors and residual) are not coded. Selecting skip macroblock prediction mode reduces the size of the encoded bitstream while possibly deteriorating image quality. Previously the selection of the skip prediction mode is performed after motion estimation process. This invention determines whether each macroblock should be encoded in skip macroblock prediction mode before motion estimation. This invention substantially reduces computational cost with a very small deterioration in coding efficiency.

Fast macroblock encoding with the early qualification of skip prediction mode using its temporal coherence

The layered coding technique is employed to achieve the image quality scalability for video coding standards. The desired image quality scalability can be achieved by refining the image coefficients in subsequent enhancement layers. In most cases, the refinement coefficient consists of some binary information such as whether this coefficient is refined in this coding pass, whether this coefficient is positively or negatively refined, etc. Because it is generally difficult to code binary information efficiently with VLC (Variable Length Coding) technology, this disclosure introduces a method to code refinement symbol more efficiently with VLC by grouping the symbols of distinct binary elements.

A system for, and method of, entropy coding. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a memory configured to contained initialized accumulated statistics coding variable values and (2) a processor configured to employ the initialized accumulated statistics coding variable values to context-adaptive encode multiple symbols until an accumulated statistics update condition occurs and updating and store the accumulated statistics coding variable values in the memory only upon occurrence of the accumulated statistics update condition.
