The (meth)acrylic acid-based copolymer of the present invention includes, as essential structural units: 16 mol % or more but 24 mol % or less of a structural unit (a) derived from a monomer represented by Formula (1): wherein Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; and X and Y each independently represent a hydroxy group, a sulfonic acid group, or a sulfonic acid salt group, at least one of X and Y representing a sulfonic acid group or a sulfonic acid salt group; and 76 mol % or more but 84 mol % or less of a structural unit (b) derived from (meth)acrylic acid or a salt thereof, each based on 100 mol % of all the structural units derived from monomers, the copolymer comprising a main chain having a sulfonic acid group or a sulfonic acid salt group at at least one end thereof, the copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of 1000 to 18000.

(Meth) acrylic acid copolymer and method for manufacturing same

A method for treating a cooling water system comprises adding, in a cooling water system having calcium hardness of 250 mg/L or less as CaCO, a treatment agent containing a (meth)acrylic acid-based copolymer. The (meth)acrylic acid-based copolymer comprises a structural unit (a) derived from a (meth)acrylic acid-based monomer (A) represented by the following general formula (1) and a structural unit (b) derived from a specific (meth)allyl ether-based monomer (B) represented by the following general formula (2), a content of the structural unit (b) is 1 to 15 mol % relative to 100 mol % of structural units derived from all the monomers, a weight average molecular weight of the (meth)acrylic acid-based copolymer is 7,000 to 28,000, and at least one of the main chain terminals of the (meth)acrylic acid-based copolymer is a sulfonic acid group or a salt thereof.

Provided is a copolymer having excellent calcium ion trapping ability, calcium carbonate dispersing capacity, and gel resistance. Provided is a copolymer aqueous solution which exerts a high calcium carbonate-deposition suppressing ability even under high hardness condition, has excellent storage stability, and suppresses coloring of a detergent to yellow even when used as a detergent raw material. The water-soluble copolymer aqueous solution includes a water-soluble copolymer and hydrogen peroxide as essential components, in which: the water-soluble copolymer at least includes, as its structure, a structural unit originating from a monoethylenic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (or dicarboxylate) monomer having 4 to 6 carbon atoms or its anhydride (a) at 30 to 60 mol %, a structural unit originating from a monoethylenic unsaturated monocarboxylic acid (or monocarboxylate) monomer having 3 to 8 carbon atoms (b), and a structural unit originating from a monoethylenic unsaturated monomer having a sulfonic (or sulfonate) group (c); the water-soluble copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of 1,000 or more and 50,000 or less; the water-soluble copolymer aqueous solution has a weight ratio of the hydrogen peroxide of 10 ppm to 50,000 ppm with respect to a solid content of the water-soluble copolymer aqueous solution; and the water-soluble copolymer aqueous solution has a weight ratio of water of 33% to 99%.

There are disclosed a (meth)acrylic copolymer and its production process, wherein the (meth)acrylic copolymer has the good chelating ability and dispersibility and is excellent both in the calcium-ion-binding ability and the gelation resistance in combination, and further, the deterioration of these various performances is inhibited even in the water system of high salt concentration. The (meth)acrylic copolymer comprises a constitutional unit (a) derivative from a specific (meth)acrylic monomer (A) and a constitutional unit (b1) derivative from a specific (meth)allyl-etheric monomer (B ) and has a phosphorus atom in the main chain; with the (meth)acrylic copolymer being characterized by having: a mutual ratio between the constitutional unit (a) and the constitutional unit (b1) in the specific range; a low molecular weight; and a content of phosphorus, as bonded to the copolymer, in the predetermined range; and further a gelation resistance of not more than 0.02 and a calcium-ion-binding ability of not less than 150 mgCaCO /g.
