An image processing apparatus has a mechanism for setting a desired magnification of a reproduced image, a display for displaying the selected magnification, an optical system for forming an image on a transfer medium, and a control unit. The control unit controls the optical system so as to form the desired magnified image even when the setting of a desired magnification changes. The control unit can also include a first timer for effecting a timing operation based on a predetermined time irrespective of input magnification and a second timer for effecting a timing operation based on the input magnification with a predetermined time relation to the first timer. In addition, the apparatus can include a first device for directly setting a magnification for image formation corresponding to a position of a movable member in accordance with a converted digital value and a second device for setting a predetermined specified magnification irrespective of the position of the movable member, or a device for selecting a retained magnification or a magnification corresponding to the position to the movable member changed before completion of image formation, without changing the position of the movable member after the completion of the image formation.

There is a control apparatus using a plurality of microcomputers for controlling an apparatus. This control apparatus comprises a first microcomputer for controlling loads and a second microcomputer, wherein the first microcomputer transmits predetermined information to the second mircocomputer and discriminates the reply data which is send therefrom. When they coincide, the first microcomputer executes a predetermined control operation. When the second microcomputer detects an error in the information transmitted from the first microcomputer, the second microcomputer allows the first microcomputer to stop the control of the loads, thereby realizing the safe control of the loads. On the other hand, predetermined priorities may be given to the microcomputers. When the microcomputer having a high priority is reset, all of the lower significant microcomputers are reset, thereby minimizing a damage when abnormality occurs. A main program malfunction of the microcomputer may be detected by a checking means provided in a sub-routine program, thereby enabling the control to be restarted safely.

A coordinate input apparatus (editor) of a copying apparatus and the like includes: a tablet to output a signal indicative of a position which is arbitrarily designated; a pointing device to designate an arbitrary point on the tablet; a recognizing circuit to recognize the positions in the X and Y directions of the point designated by the pointing device; a data memory to store the positions of the designated point; a controller which, when a special area on the tablet is designated by the pointing device, allows the signal indicative of the special area to be output; and a correcting circuit to correct the range of the special area. The positions of the designated point in the X and Y directions are detected a plurality of times and compared. The input coordinate data is discriminated by the result of the comparison to see if it is valid or invalid. When the input data is valid, a copying operation is performed. When it is invalid, the copying operation is stopped and the fact that the input data is improper is displayed by an LED indicator and a buzzer is activated. With this apparatus, the coordinate data can be accurately input from the editor and also the accurate trimming or masking of the image can be realized without an erroneous input operation.

An image forming apparatus which uses process sequence control for forming images using several computers includes circuits for detecting abnormal conditions in either the computer hardware or program sequence. Instruction signals for image formation are entered through an input circuit. When abnormal conditions are detected, the input circuit is prevented from entering instruction signals to one computer and another computer interrupts the image formation process. This other computer transmits data comprising a signal for indicating a process cycle and a signal for indicating disabled image formation.

In an enlargement copying operation, the original is scanned for a length corresponding to a transfer paper sheet of a large size; in other copying operations, the original is scanned for a length corresponding to the size of the paper sheet. Over-heating of the original base is thus prevented during reproduction of copies of any size.
