A surface light source device which illuminates a transmission-type liquid crystal display unit from the back surface includes P&#xd7;Q surface light source units with individually controlled light sources. Each of the light sources includes a plurality of light-emitting element units. Each of the light-emitting element units includes at least one red light-emitting element that emits red light, at least one green light-emitting element that emits green light, and at least one blue light-emitting element that emits blue light. The center of mass of a luminance profile based on each of a plurality of red light-emitting elements, a plurality of green light-emitting elements, and a plurality of blue light-emitting elements in each surface light source unit substantially coincides with the center of mass of the surface light source unit.

Disclosed is a backlight control apparatus for controlling a backlight used in a liquid crystal display, the backlight having a lighting area that includes a plurality of blocks in each of which a backlight luminance is individually allowed to change. The apparatus includes a backlight control unit that calculates the backlight luminance of each block so that the absolute value of the difference between a backlight lighting ratio and 1 is at or below a first value, and controls the backlight so as to yield the calculated backlight luminances of the respective blocks, the backlight lighting ratio being the ratio between backlight set values of neighboring blocks.

A display apparatus includes a display unit having a display screen divided into a plurality of regions and controlled using a transmittance ratio on a pixel-by-pixel basis, a backlight including a plurality of sets of light sources, each set being disposed so as to correspond to one of the regions, and a control unit for identifying display luminance in each region, computing the emission luminance of each light source on the basis of the identified display luminance while taking into account an effect on the region of the other light sources not corresponding to the region, and computing a correction value for each pixel on the basis of a shift amount between the set emission luminance and an optimal display luminance for one of the regions, and delivering a display driving signal generated on the basis of the correction value to each pixel so as to control the luminance of the pixel.

Gas discharge display device, plasma addressed liquid crystal display device, and method for producing the same

A plasma address display apparatus is composed of a flat panel, a scanning circuit, and a signal circuit. The flat panel has a layered structure wherein a plasma cell having scanning electrodes disposed in rows and a display cell having signal electrodes disposed in columns are placed one on the other. The scanning circuit successively applies a selection pulse to the scanning electrodes to effect scanning of the display cell. The signal circuit supplies image data to the signal electrodes in synchronism with the scanning to write the image data for individual scanning lines. The plasma cell has discharge channels formed in rows such that they are isolated from each other, and a plurality of scanning electrodes are allocated to each of the discharge channels. The scanning circuit successively applies a selection pulse to the scanning electrodes allocated to a discharge channel to cause discharge to occur so that, for example, at least two scanning lines are formed in each one discharge channel. Since at least two scanning lines are formed in each one discharge channel, the plasma address display apparatus can achieve realization in numerical aperture and also in resolution.

Plasma address display apparatus

A plasma addressed display device includes a flat panel, a scanning circuit and a signal circuit. The flat panel is of a superimposed structure of a plasma cell having scanning electrodes in a row configuration and a display cell having scanning electrodes in a column configuration. The scanning circuit sequentially applies selection pulses to the scanning electrode to scan the display panel. The signal circuit writes the picture data in the signal electrode in synchronism with this scanning. On the plasma cells, there are formed reciprocally isolated discharge channels in a row configuration. To each discharge channel, charged with an electrically dischargeable gas, are allotted plural scanning electrodes. As characteristic of the present invention, the scanning circuit sequentially applies the selection pulses to the scanning electrode allotted to a sole discharge channel to produce electrical discharge to form at least two scanning lines to a sole discharge channel. This realizes a high open area ratio and high resolution of the plasma addressed display device.

A plasma addressing display device comprising a flat panel including a display cell having columns of signal electrodes and also including a plasma cell having rows of discharge channels, with pixels formed at intersections of the signal electrodes and the discharge channels; a scanning circuit for sequentially discharging the columns of the signal electrodes at a pre-set period to select pixels from row to row; and a signal circuit for supplying picture signals to the column of the signal electrodes to write the picture signals in the pixels of the selected row, the scanning circuit discharging each discharge channel with time shift as the discharging period allocated to the discharge channel of a previous row is partially overlapped at least with the discharging period allocated to the discharge channel of the next row to allocate a discharging period longer than the pre-set period to each discharge channel.

A plasma addressed liquid crystal display which includes a pair of spaced substrates upon which orthogonal electrodes are mounted and electro-optical material layer mounted in contact with a first group of electrodes on the first substrate and an ionizable gas between the substrate and the electro-optical material layer to provide a discharge region that functions as a visible display.

Disclosed is a plasma addressed display device characterized in that a plurality of scanning electrodes are formed in each discharge channel, wherein discharge is generated by applying selective pulses in sequence to the plurality of scanning electrodes allocated to each discharge channel, whereby each of the number of the scanning electrodes and the number of partition walls can be reduced in at least half to thereby enhance the opening ratio, as compared with a related art plasma addressed display device.
