A display apparatus includes two substrates having electrodes, respectively, and a liquid crystal layer arranged between the two substrates. One of the two substrates includes a plurality of linear luminous sources ranged in parallel each other, a plurality of linear electrodes ranged in parallel each other and the linear electrodes being crossed with the plurality of linear luminous sources, and a plurality of photoconductive layers provided at crossed positions of the plurality of linear luminous sources and the plurality of linear electrodes, the photoconductive layers serving to perform switching operation in response to light applied from the plurality of linear luminous sources. The liquid crystal has pixels to be driven by a signal applied through the plurality of linear electrodes and the plurality of photoconductive layers.

A multi-layered liquid crystal display device is disclosed, which includes a stack of liquid crystal layers in which the longitudinal axes of the liquid crystal molecules extend spirally, the liquid crystal layers being disposed in parallel with the spiral axes. A voltage supply is provided for supplying a voltage to at least a portion of the liquid crystal layers for conversion of the molecular alignment. Also provided is a pair of polarizers for making visible the conversion of the molecular alignment. More particularly, the polarization direction of the polarizers or direction normal to the polarization direction is deflected within the range of 3.degree. to 15.degree. with respect to the longitudinal direction of the liquid crystal molecules in a sense to reduce the spiral angle of the liquid crystal layers and the deflection angle is substantially in alignment with the longitudinal direction of the liquid crystal molecules.

Multi-layered liquid crystal panel with twisted nematic liquid crystal

A liquid-crystal composition to be used in a multiplex-driving system in a twisted nematic (TN) type liquid-crystal display devices is extremely superior in its display characteristics, and is able to meet sufficiently the demands to increase the information content of various liquid-crystal display devices of high-level multiplexing operation. The liquid-crystal composition is more considerable in its usefulness than the validity thereof in half-tone display especially when it is used in a liquid-crystal television. The liquid crystal composition having a positive dielectric anisotropy in the nematic phase, comprises each 3 wt % or more of 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-alkylpyrimidine compound and of a cyanobiphenyl compound.

An improved electrode assembly is disclosed herein especially for use in a matrix type liquid crystal display panel, which assures exact alignment of picture elements and increased yield of manufacture regardless of disalignment between scanning electrodes and signal electrodes in the electrode assembly. The display panel includes a first support carrying a plurality of the scanning electrodes, a second support carrying a plurality of the signal electrodes and disposed to face the first support and a layer of liquid crystal material interposed between the first and second supports. The signal electrodes are divided into an upper block and a lower block and the scanning electrodes are used in common for the upper and lower blocks. Pursuant to the present invention, the width of division between the upper and lower blocks of the signal electrodes is smaller than the spacing of the scanning electrodes.

Liquid crystal composition

A liquid crystal display cell using cell substrates of a flexible organic polymer film and containing liquid crystals injected in a space between the cell substrates. Spacers are dispersed between the cell substrates and immobilized by an orienting layer for orienting liquid crystal molecules. A thin glass substrate can be substituted for the flexible organic polymer film. The liquid crystal display cell is produced by a method including the steps of creating a liquid crystal molecule orienting solution having spacers dispersed therein, applying the orienting film solution containing the spacers to the cell substrates, subjecting the applied solution to a curing treatment, sealing liquid crystals in a space formed between the cell substrates in which the interior thickness corresponds to the diameter of the spacers. The spacers are immobilized by the orienting film during the curing step. The spacers, rather than being mixed in the orienting solution before it is applied, can be scattered on the substrate before the solution is applied or scattered on the solution after it is applied to the substrate.

Liquid crystal display cell and method for manufacturing thereof

Numerous photoelectric translation cells are arranged to correspond to associated picture elements in an active type matrix LCD display system. When a light pen is used as an input means, the system allows detection of light beam positions, enabling it to function as an input means. The liquid crystal input/output system constructed in this manner has advantages of low power consumption and thin and lightweight construction as compared with conventional input/output systems using a combination of CRT and light pen. It is best suited for applications in portable electronic appliances and offers great technical benefit by arranging the photoelectric translation cells in a manner so as to increase the aperture ratio of the matrix display.

Cell construction for color liquid crystal display devices

A liquid crystal display device includes a field effect transistor array substrate (22) and a counter substrate (23). The field effect transistor array substrate (22) carries FETs (3), capacitors (5) and one electrode of the liquid crystal element deposited on a glass support (7). The counter substrate (23) carries a common electrode (31) in a form of stripes which extend parallel to the gate electrodes (8), and are deposited on another glass support (7'). The substrates are bonded together via a sealing member (21) and a suitable liquid crystal material (16) is injected therebetween. The device further includes a detecting circuit (33) for detecting a voltage produces at the drain electrode (6), a discriminator (34) for discriminating whether the voltage detected by the detecting circuit (33) is above or below a predetermined voltage, and a frame frequency adjusting circuit (35). When the detected voltage is higher than a predetermined potential, the adjusting circuit (35) increases the frame frequency, resulting in decrease of the write-in or coloration voltage. When the detected voltage is lower than the predetermined potential, the adjusting circuit (35) decreases the frame frequency, resulting in increase of the write-in voltage. Thus, the voltage applied to the liquid crystal (16) is corrected.

In a multi-layer matrix type liquid crystal display panel having a stack of liquid crystal display cells and matrix electrodes provided for respective ones of the liquid crystal display cells, the supports of the respective liquid crystal display cells are piled sequentially, one on top of the other, with a first dimension sequentially longer and a second dimension sequentially shorter, thereby allowing enough room on all sides for electrode connections. A rigid circuit board has terminals which face away from the terminals of the display panel. The terminals of the display panel and the circuit board are connected through a plurality of flexible sheets.

In a further aspect, the plurality of pairs of the segmented display electrodes and the common electrodes are allotted equally to each of the pair of substrates.
