A monitoring and control system is provided having a control device, arranged in a central controller room, which provides commands to power distribution panel switch gear located in the field. The switch gear transmits and receives controlling and monitoring signals through wireless communication applying an evanescent mode. The switch gear has a power circuit connected to a plurality of devices to be operated. The switch gear is a panel comprising metal and non-metal surfaces, so that a portion of wireless waves in the evanescent mode travel out of the panel. A receiver is provided for monitoring the wireless waves that travel out of the panel. The wireless signals are compared with information stored in a diagnostics database, and are diagnostically evaluated to determine whether the signals are within a known normal operating range.

A communication module of a controller for outputting a command relating to an operation and a monitor for auxiliaries to be operated and a communication module of a switch gear for generating information relating to a protection and an interlock for the auxiliaries to be operated are connected through a serial transmission cable wires. In a display method and a display unit, information which is required or often used by an operator is processed visually conspicuously by enlarged display or colored display in accordance with historical data such as the past running conditions of the plant, the number of times of operations by an operator, the frequency of operations, and so on, and the processed information is displayed on the display unit. The use of historical data permits an operator to readily recognize which equipment is in most need of attention due to repeated problems in the past.
