A thin film magnetic head includes a spin valve film that includes a magnetization free layer, a magnetization pinned layer and a non-magnetic spacer layer that is disposed between the magnetization free and pinned layers, and a pair of side layers that are disposed at both sides of the spin valve film in a track width direction and at least in the vicinity of the magnetization free layer and the magnetization pinned layer. Each of the side layers has a bias magnetic field application layer that includes a soft magnetic layer and applies a bias magnetic field in the track width direction to the magnetization free layer, and a gap layer that is positioned between the spin valve film and the bias magnetic field application layer, and the side layers have compression stresses at least in the vicinity of the magnetization pinned layer.

A trailing shield is provided on a trailing side of a magnetic pole with a non-magnetic gap layer in between, and an intermediate layer having negative uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy is provided between the non-magnetic gap layer and the trailing shield. The intermediate layer has a magnetic property in which an easy axis of magnetization is provided in an in-plane direction and thus magnetization is likely to occur in that direction, whereas a difficult axis of magnetization is provided in a direction intersecting the in-plane direction and thus magnetization is less likely to occur in that direction. Accordingly, magnetic flux becomes difficult to excessively flow from the magnetic pole into the trailing shield.

The first support layer has a leading shield, and the leading shield has a low-level flat part, a slope part and a high-level flat part continuously arranged at one side in the recited order toward the air bearing surface. The antireflection film entirely covers the low-level flat part, the slope part and the high-level flat part of the leading shield. A magneto-resistive effect (MR) element includes a magneto-resistive (MR) stack with a magnetization free layer, a bias magnetic field application layer positioned on a side of the MR stack, and an insulation film insulating the bias magnetic field application layer. A perpendicular recording element includes a main magnetic pole film for emitting a perpendicular magnetic field and is supported by a slider. The main magnetic pole film includes an electrode film and a plated film, the electrode film is an alloy film of at least one element selected from the platinum group and Ni, and the plated film is a magnetic film grown on the electrode film.

The present invention relates to a magnetic head, a head assembly, and a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus which are capable of effectively detecting thermal asperity. The magnetic head according to the present invention includes a heat-generating resistor, a recording coil, and a resistive element. The heat-generating resistor is adapted to generate heat when power is fed thereto so that the heat generation causes at least a part of the air bearing surface to thermally expand and protrude. The recording coil is adapted to generate a recording magnetic field, and the resistive element is disposed closer to the air bearing surface than the recording coil and connected in series or in parallel with the heater. Thus, the resistive element can share a common wiring with the heater for power feeding, which eliminates the waste of wiring and achieves miniaturization.

For obtaining a flying height of a magnetic head from a magnetic disk, the magnetic head being placed in a slider arranged at an interval with the magnetic disk, an initial setting process and a flying height detecting process are performed. In the initial setting process, driving power to a heater is increased gradually, from a state where the heater arranged at a position in proximity to the magnetic head in the slider is not driven, until the magnetic head makes contact with the magnetic disk. Then, in each stage, an electrical resistance value of the sensor arranged at a position in proximity to the magnetic head in the slider, which is increased due to the heat from heater, and either an approach distance of the magnetic head toward the magnetic disk or the flying height of the magnetic head from the magnetic disk are acquired. Then, basic data is prepared by obtaining the relationship between a variation of the electrical resistance value of the sensor and the flying height of the magnetic head from the magnetic disk, which is obtained in each stage or which calculated from the approach distance in each stage. In the flying height detecting process, an electrical resistance value of the sensor is determined, and a variation of the electrical resistance value is calculated from the determined values. Then, the flying height of the magnetic head from the magnetic disk in the state where the electrical resistance value was determined is obtained based on the basic data obtained in the initial setting process, using the calculated variation of the electrical resistance value.

The present invention relates to a perpendicular recording magnetic head. A main magnetic pole film includes an electrode film and a plated magnetic film. The electrode film includes a Ru film and a conductive magnetic film, and the Ru film, which follows the shape of an inner wall surface of a recess formed in a first non-magnetic film, is adhered to the inner wall surface of the recess or a surface of a second non-magnetic film adhered thereto. The conductive magnetic film is adhered to a surface of the Ru film, thereby following the shape of the inner wall surface of the recess. The plated magnetic film is disposed adjacent the conductive magnetic film, thereby filling up the recess.

A recording element supported by a slider includes a non-magnetic film and a magnetic pole film. The non-magnetic film has a depression whose inner surface is provided with an amorphous electrode film used as a plating seed film. Above the electrode film, the magnetic pole film is grown by plating. The magnetic pole film may be either an electroplated film grown on the electrode film to have a maximum crystal grain size of 20 nm or less or an electroless plated film. This decreases coercive force of the magnetic pole film.
