A casing constituting a housing type pipe joint is divided into an inner casing which externally fits to a sealing member to restrain a shape of a sealing member and an outer casing which is prepared outside the inner casing, engages with a pair of tubular members with their tube ends opposing each other inside the sealing member and presses the inner casing against the sealing member, these inner and outer casings being constituted by plural segments, each of which is formed as an integrated object from a metal plate, and a plate thickness of the inner casing is equal to or larger than a plate thickness of the outer casing. Thereby, a housing type pipe joint which can achieve both a function to restrain a shape of a sealing member and a function to engage tubular members at a sufficiently high level and is compact and lightweight is provided.

A bend die comprises a clamp member having a first groove part of half-circular cross section on its outer peripheral surface with a fitting recess formed on the first groove part and extending in a peripheral direction by a first predetermined length on a planar surface perpendicular to a rotary axis, and a counter pressure member having a second groove part of half-circular cross section formed on its outer peripheral surface, and a fitting protrusion extending in a peripheral direction by a second predetermined length from a tip end portion of the second groove part. The fitting protrusion is positioned in the fitting recess so that a pipe-receiving groove of half-circular cross section is formed. The first and second groove parts are hingedly connected to one another about the rotary axis so as to be rotated relative to each other.

A method for forming a part of deformed cross section with non-rotation symmetry on an end portion of a cylindrical workpiece. The method includes steps of performing a first relative motion of a roller against the workpiece toward its one open end, and performing a second relative motion of the roller against at least a part of outer peripheral surface of the end portion of the workpiece toward the inside thereof, while the roller is rotated relative to the workpiece by one rotation, in such a state as being held to be in contact with the end portion, in a plane which is perpendicular to the moving direction of the first relative motion, and which includes a position where the roller contacts the outer peripheral surface of the end portion, and performing a rotational motion of the roller relatively rotating around the workpiece, while performing the second relative motion, with the roller being held to be in contact with the outer peripheral surface of the end portion. The first relative motion is performed up to a position exceeding the one open end, while repeating the second relative motion and the rotational motion.

Method for forming an end portion of a cylindrical workpiece

A single valve member is provided for selecting communication of one of two flow passages constituting an exhaust flow passage, and continuously providing a flow passage area of the selected one of the two flow passages. According to this valve member, a changeover of flow passage between a main flow passage with an exhaust processing device disposed therein and a bypass flow passage is performed, and each flow passage area is regulated, to meet an output requirement, exhaust processing requirement and muffling requirement, appropriately. For example, a single valve memberis disposed on the upstream side or downstream side of a start catalytic converter, whereby communication of one of a main flow passageand a bypass flow passageis selected, and a flow passage area of the selected passage is continuously provided.

The present invention is directed to a method of producing a container for holding a columnar member in a cylindrical housing with a shock absorbent member wrapped around the columnar member. The method comprises the steps of (1) compressing at least a part of the absorbent member wrapped around the columnar member, by a pushing member in a radial direction toward the longitudinal axis, (2) measuring a pressure applied to the absorbent member by the pushing member, (3) measuring a distance between the axis of the columnar member and an end of the pushing member contacting the absorbent member, when the measured pressure substantially equals a predetermined target pressure, to provide a target radius, (4) inserting the columnar member and the absorbent member into the housing loosely, and (5) reducing a diameter of the housing along its longitudinal axis, with the absorbent member being compressed, to such an extent that the inner radius of the housing substantially equals the target radius, to hold the columnar member and the absorbent member compressed at the target pressure, in the housing.

Method and apparatus of producing a columnar member container

The present invention is directed to a method of producing a catalytic converter which comprises the steps of providing a shock absorbent member around an outer periphery of a catalyst substrate, inserting the catalyst substrate and the shock absorbent member into a cylindrical workpiece, fixing the cylindrical workpiece to prevent the cylindrical workpiece from being rotated about a longitudinal axis thereof, reducing a diameter of a body portion of the cylindrical workpiece covering at least a portion of the shock absorbent member to hold the catalyst substrate in the cylindrical workpiece, spinning at least an end portion of the cylindrical workpiece, by means of a plurality of spinning rollers, which are evenly positioned around the outer periphery of the end portion, and which are revolved about the axis of the end portion along a common circular locus, and moved in a radial direction of the end portion, and moving the plurality of spinning rollers in an axial direction of the end portion to reduce a diameter of the end portion along the axis thereof, and thereby form a neck portion of the cylindrical workpiece.

According to the spinning processing method of the invention, a steel tube ( ) as a work is rotated round its longitudinal axis (X). A plurality of forming rollers ( ), which are arranged around the steel tube ( ), are rotated round the steel tube axis (X) in the direction (&bgr;) opposite to the direction of rotation for the steel tube ( ). The forming rollers are further moved toward the steel tube axis (X) into pressure contact with the steel tube ( ), while being moved relatively to the steel tube ( ) in the axial direction (A-B) thereof, to draw the steel tube ( ) to form a section of reduced diameter. The relative rotation of the steel tube ( ) and the forming rollers ( ) in the opposite directions (&agr;, &bgr;) increases the relative rotation speed between them and shortens the processing time.

Spinning processing method and apparatus therefor

A method of producing a catalytic converter comprises the steps of (1) providing a shock absorbent member around an outer periphery of a catalyst substrate, (2) inserting the catalyst substrate and the shock absorbent member into a cylindrical workpiece, fixing the cylindrical workpiece to prevent the cylindrical workpiece from being rotated about a longitudinal axis thereof, and (3) spinning at least a portion of the cylindrical workpiece covering at least a portion of the shock absorbent member, by means of a plurality of spinning rollers, which are evenly positioned around the outer periphery of the cylindrical workpiece, and which are revolved about the axis of the cylindrical workpiece along a common circular locus, and moved in a radial direction of the cylindrical workpiece, whereby the cylindrical workpiece and the shock absorbent member are reduced in diameter, so that the catalyst substrate is securely held in the cylindrical workpiece.
