Selection candidates for number of imaging pixels and for an image compression rate are displayed in a two-dimensional arrangement on a setting screen for setting an image quality, and combinations of selectable number of image pixels and a compression rate can be presented to a user. An instruction for moving a cursor which displays a selected position on the screen is received, and a setting can be changed to a number of pixels and a compression rate which are pointed by the cursor after a position of the cursor is designated. More specifically, numbers of pixels to be selected are 2400&#xd7;1800, 1280&#xd7;960, and 640&#xd7;480, and compression rates to be selected are Fine, Normal, and Basic. When the user selects the number of pixels, candidates of the selectable compression rate for the number of pixels are displayed. A number of photographable images and remaining time for recording a moving image which are calculated from a capacity of a storage medium are preferably displayed in combination in accordance with combinations of the number of pixels and the compression rate.

Image quality selecting method and digital camera

An image pickup apparatus captures an image of an object through an image pickup lens by an image pickup element according to an image pickup operation, generates image data, and records the image data in a recording section. The apparatus includes a microphone that collects speech of a person who takes images, a speech recognition section that recognizes speech output from the microphone and outputs a character code, and an image signal processing section that decides whether a folder having a name code corresponding to the character string code exists in the recording section or not based on the character string code output from the speech recognition section and performs processing of recording the image data in the folder when the character string code matches the name code.

Image pickup apparatus

The present invention provides a digital camera in which the start-up time which is from when a power source is turned on until the digital camera is in a state in which photographing is possible is short. A DC motor and a stepping motor are driven simultaneously. A cord plate which is provided in advance at an outer circumferential surface of a rotating cylinder is detected. Then, the stepping motor is driven to move the focus lens by a movement amount corresponding to a detected range of the cord plate. When the setting of various types of components necessary for photographing other than the lens groups has finished, even if the zoom lens groups (forward lens group and backward lens group) are moving to their home positions, the digital camera is in a state in which photographing is possible.

Digital camera for fast start up

The present invention provides a digital camera which can adjust the start-up time in accordance with an amount of an electric energy of a power source being used at the time. The electric energy of the power source and the type thereof are determined on the basis of a voltage value of the power source which is inputted via a bus (stepsand). If it is determined that the amount of the electric energy of the power source is large, the DC motor and the stepping motor are driven simultaneously so as to reduce the start-up time. If it is determined that the amount of the electric energy of the power source is small, the DC motor and the stepping motor are sequentially driven to save the electric energy.

System and method for adjusting start-up of a digital camera
