Excitation light beam is irradiated onto a test region while shifting the irradiation position thereof, when performing analysis of a target substance using an analysis chip having the test region within a flow channel through which a sample solution is caused to flow, for capturing the target substance within the sample solution. Fluorescence generated at the test region is detected as a plurality of adjustment fluorescence signals. The target substance is analyzed using fluorescence generated when the excitation light beam is irradiated at an irradiation position within the test region determined based on the plurality of adjustment fluorescence signals.

The shape of a prism is set such that an excitation light beam that enters the prism to cause surface plasmon resonance to be generated is not irradiated onto the corners of the prism after being totally reflected within the prism. The angle of a surface that the excitation light exits the prism is set to an angle at which the excitation light beam is not totally reflected. Thereby, the excitation light beam returning to a light source, and being scattered within the prism are prevented, and therefore the accuracy of measurements can be improved.

A surface plasmon resonance sensor unit includes a prism. A thin film has a first surface and a sensing surface. The first surface overlies the prism to constitute a thin film/prism interface. The sensing surface immobilizes a sample in sample fluid. Illuminating light is applied to the interface in a form satisfying a condition for total internal reflection, to create attenuated total reflection in the illuminating light reflected by the interface. An angle of incidence of the illuminating light upon the attenuated total reflection is changed upon (bio)chemical reaction of the sample on the sensing surface. The sensor unit includes an enclosing cover, secured to the prism, for covering the sensing surface. A lower recess is formed in the prism, and positioned at the sensing surface. The lower recess constitutes a flow channel for flow of the sample fluid on the sensing surface.

An image reading apparatus includes three laser stimulating ray sources, a stage on which two or more kinds of image carriers can selectively be placed, a scanning mechanism for scanning the image carrier with a laser beam emitted from the laser stimulating ray sources, thereby stimulating the image carrier, a light detector for photoelectrically detecting light emitted from the image carrier in response to stimulation by the laser beam and a confocal optical system for leading light emitted from the image carrier to the light detector, the image reading apparatus further including a confocal switching member having pinholes of different diameters and disposed between the confocal optical system and the light detector. The thus constituted image reading apparatus can be used for not only a micro-array image detecting system but also an autoradiographic image detecting system, a chemiluminescent image detecting system, an image detecting system using an electron microscope and a radiographic diffraction image detecting system using a stimulable phosphor sheet and a fluorescent image detecting system.

Image reading apparatus

An autoradiographic process for obtaining locational information on two or more radioactively labeled substances which have different energy or half-life and are contained in a sample such as tissue of an organism. Specifically, the process includes the steps of placing the sample on a stimulable phosphor sheet having a plastic cover layer to cause the stimulable phosphor to absorb radiation energy of the labeled substances and reading the absorbed radiation energy out of the phosphor to obtain an image signal corresponding to one radioactively labeled substance and placing the sample on a stimulable phosphor sheet having a thinner plastic cover layer or no cover film to cause the stimulable phosphor to absorb radiation energy of the labeled substances and reading the absorbed radiation energy out of the phosphor to obtain image signals corresponding to plural radioactively labeled substances. Then, the process includes the step of subjecting the image signals of (a) and (b) to subtraction processing so that image signals corresponding to plural radioactively labeled substances can be separately obtained.
