An electronic blood pressure meter determines, in an inflation process, pressure Ps correlated to systolic pressure, pressure Pd correlated to diastolic pressure and pulse wave period Pc, and then calculates deflation rate def&minus;v in a deflation process based on a first formula (def&minus;v&equals;(Ps&minus;Pd&minus;mb1)&times;Pc/N, where N represents the number of required beats). Further, maximum inflation value Inf&minus;max is calculated based on a second formula (Inf&minus;max&equals;def&minus;v&middot;(np&times;Pc&plus;&agr;)&plus;Ps&plus;&bgr;1). The pressure is increased to reach the calculated maximum value and then deflation is started at the calculated deflation rate . The blood pressure meter can thus perform a precise measurement in a shortest time.

This invention relates to an infrared clinical thermometer having a probe projecting forward from the main thermometer body. The probe is designed to be inserted into an ear canal and detect infrared radiation from a human eardrum in order to measure body temperature. A measurement start switch is located on the upper portion of the rear side of the thermometer main body, substantially in line with the probe. When the measurement start switch is pressed, the probe does not rotate or tilt, allowing a accurate temperature measurement to be obtained. The thermometer also has a display which shows the measurement results after the operation of the measurement start switch. The display is located on the upper portion of the rear side of the main body, so that it can be clearly seen as the thermometer is held by the operator.

The threshold value TH is calculated as a value equivalent to a pulse-wave amplitude corresponding to systolic pressure that would be determined in the course of depressurization. After the cuff is pressurized to the target pressure, a transition is made to the depressurizing process. It is judged that cuff pressurization is inadequate if the initial pulse-wave amplitude in the course of depressurization is greater than the threshold value TH. Thus, whether or not cuff pressurization is inadequate can be judged appropriately at all times without any influence due to personal differences or physical condition.

An electronic blood pressure meter capable of performing a proper automatic pressuring operation according to a blood pressure of a subject and measuring the blood pressure rapidly with accuracy. An electronic blood pressure meter includes a cuff, a pressure controller for controlling an inside fluid pressure of the cuff, a pressure sensor for sensing the inside fluid pressure of the cuff to produce a cuff pressure detecting signal, an extracting unit for extracting a pulse wave component superposed on the cuff pressure detecting signal during pressure control operations performed by the pressure controller, a calculating unit for calculating an amplitude of the extracted pulse wave for each pressure measurement, a unit for determining a blood pressure during an evacuating operation of the pressure controller based on output signals from the calculating unit and the pressure sensor, maximum blood pressure estimating unit which obtains an estimated value of a maximum blood pressure in response to output signals from the extracting unit and the pressure sensor during the pressuring operation of the control means. The pressure controller stops the pressuring operation when the inside fluid pressure of the cuff exceeds a total pressure of the estimated value and a predetermined value.

A blood pressure measuring device is provided which comprises a cuff for pressuring an artery, electronic circuitry made up of a clock, control unit, and blood pressure measuring unit for measuring blood pressure and controlling the device, and a cuff pressurizing and depressurizing unit. The basic components of the device are used to effectively give the patient, through a feeling of pressure from the cuff, information such as a signal indicating the start of measurement, by momentarily pressurizing the cuff then depressurizing it. This signal can be detected by hearing imparied patients as well as healthy patients who are in a noisy environment, but can not be noticed by others in close proximity to the patient.
