An azo compound is represented by formula (1A). Land Leach represent a divalent linking group or a single bond. y represents 1 or 2. p and q each represent 0 or 1, and at least one of p and q is 1. X represents an oxygen atom or NR, and Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group. R, R, and Reach represent an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, and may each have a polymerizable group. Q represents a single bond or a group selected from —OC(═O)—, —C(—O)O—, —C═C—, —CH═CH—, —N═N—, —NHC(═O)—, and —C(═O)NH—. Ar, Ar, and Areach represent a 1,4-phenylene group or a divalent sulfur-containing aromatic heterocyclic group. When y is 2, two Ars may be the same or different.
