There is provided a composite thin film-holding substrate in which a composite thin film () comprising a filler () having a refractive index lower than that of a substrate () and a binder () having a refractive index higher than that of the filler () is formed on a surface of the substrate (). Light is efficiently scattered when passing through the composite thin film () which comprises the filler () and the binder () having different refractive indexes from each other. In addition, the refractive index of a composite thin film () comprising a filler () having a low refractive index is low. As a result, the discharge efficiency of light which passes through the composite thin film () from the substrate () to the external is improved.

Aerogel substrate and method for preparing the same

There is provided a process for producing an aerogel which comprises lowering a pH of a water glass solution to obtain a sol, gelling the sol to obtain a hydrogel, replacing water in the gel with an organic solvent, reacting the gel with a hydrophobilizing agent having hydrophobic groups as well as functional groups reactive with silanol groups in liquid phase, followed by supercritically drying; or hydrophobilizing and supercritically drying the resultant gel at the same time. Preferably, the hydrogel is prepared by ion exchanging alkali metals in the water glass solution using an ion exchange resin to obtain a sol which is subjected to suspension polymerization.

Process for producing aerogel

A side-face illuminating optical fiber comprising a core 1 transmitting therethrough light entering from an incident end of the optical fiber, a cladding 2 made of silica aerogel which covers an outer peripheral surface of the core, a transparent coating layer 3 which covers an outer periphery of the cladding, and an illuminating portion formed at least in a part of an interface between the core and the cladding. The light transmitting though said core radiates through the illuminating portion to the cladding.

A hydrophobic aerogel is fabricated by reacting a polymer having a skeleton structure of (SiO.sub.2).sub.n with a hydrophobic agent having hydrophobic groups as well as functional groups reactive to silanol groups to obtain a denatured polymer, forming a gel consisting of two phase of a dispersing medium and the denatured polymer which was performed a hydrophobic treatment, and then, supercritically drying the gel at temperature and pressure above a critical point of the dispersing medium. The hydrophobic aerogel has improved characteristics free from deterioration in light transmissivity as well as lowered thermal resistance and also free from a dimensional variation such as shrinkage which would otherwise occur by contact with moisture, so that it can maintain the excellent characteristics for long time periods. Particularly, the aerogel is useful as a material having excellent light transmissivity and thermal resistance.

Process of forming a hydrophobic aerogel

An optical fiber comprises a core 1 extending in a longitudinal direction and a cladding 3 of silica aerogel preferably having a hydrophobic property to provide a high optical transmission efficiency. The silica aerogel of the cladding is prepared by polymerizing a hydrolyzed alkoxysilane before a supercritical drying treatment and is subjected to a hydrophobic treatment before or during the supercritical drying.

A hydrophobic aerogel having excellent transparency is formed by the following process of the present invention. That is, a first gel having a SiO.sub.2 skeleton structure is prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of an alkoxysilane compound in the presence of a solvent. The solvent contained in the first gel is replaced at least partially with a medium to form a second gel. The second gel is reacted with a hydrophobic agent having hydrophobic groups as well as functional groups reactive with silanol groups under a supercritical condition of the medium to form a hydrophobic gel. The medium contained in the hydrophobic aerogel is removed by a supercritical drying method, so that the hydrophobic aerogel having improved transparency and an extremely fine porous structure is obtained.

Method for manufacturing inorganic porous layered member

A porous clay composite having fine metal particles deposited substantially only on surfaces of inorganic particles which are intercalated between layers of an expandable clay is obtained. After the expandable clay is expanded with a solvent into an expanded clay, the inorganic particles are intercalated between the layers of the expanded clay. The inorganic particles have photo-semiconducting property, that is, a plurality of carriers such as electrons and holes are released from the inorganic particles by irradiation of a light such as ultraviolet light. A solution including metal ions is mixed with the inorganic particles intercalated clay to form a mixed solution thereof. Subsequently, the light is irradiated to the mixed solution to deposit the fine metal particles substantially only on the inorganic particles which are intercalated between the layers of the expanded clay, so that the porous clay composite is formed in the mixed solution. The porous clay composite including the mixed solution is dried by a supercritical drying or a carbon dioxide extractive drying, etc., so as not to disrupt a porous structure thereof. When a metal having oxidation/reduction catalysis is used as the fine metal particles, the porous clay composite functions as an excellent oxidation/reduction catalyst.

A method of preparing an inorganic porous member causes a layered inorganic compound in swelled state with a solvent contained therein to be dried in a super critical state, so as to have holes held between respective layers of the inorganic compound, whereby the layered compound can be excellently maintained with less agglomeration caused upon removal of the solvent and the hole volume in the entire inorganic porous member can be remarkably increased.

Method of preparing inorganic porous member

A method for manufacturing a fine porous member provides that vacant space within the porous member is sufficiently finely small such that the thermal conductivity of the member is lower than that of stationary air. In the method, a fine particle powder together with an ultrafine particle powder preliminarily subjected to a surface treatment for prevention of cohesiveness and employed at least as a part of the fine particle powder, are molded into the fine porous member, whereby the vacant space between the respective particles are made finely small to a remarkable extent and the porous member is provided as highly adapted to be used as a heat insulator.
