A teaching playback swing-phase-controlled above-knee prosthesis comprises a thigh frame, a leg frame, an air cylinder interconnecting the thigh and leg frames and provided with adjusting means for adjusting the degree of opening the valve of the air cylinder to a plurality of degrees respectively for a plurality of walking speeds selected during trial walking, a mode selecting switch having positions respectively for setting degrees of opening of the valve of the air cylinder in a teaching mode and for a playback mode in which one of the degrees of opening is selected according to an actual walking speed, an opening detector for detecting the degree of opening of the valve of the air cylinder, an opening storage device for storing a plurality of set degrees of opening of the valve of the air cylinder, a phase detector for detecting swing phases and stance phases, walking speed detector for detecting an actual walking speed, and control unit for adjusting the degree of opening of the valve of the air cylinder to one of the set degrees of opening corresponding to the actual walking speed. The teaching playback swing-phase-controlled above-knee prosthesis is capable of automatically controlling the speed of swing motion of the leg frame according to the actual walking speed of the prosthesis wearer.

The crash sensor of the present invention comprises a magnet, a sensing mass made of a ferromagnetic material and attractable by the magnet, a sleeve made of a paramagnetic material and restricting the movement of the sensing mass in one direction, a pair of strips that make a closed circuit by contact with the sensing mass having moved in one direction and a body fitted with the magnet and housing the sensing mass, the sleeve and the contacts; the crash sensor further comprising a magnetic shield made of a ferromagnetic material and covering the magnet and the body. The magnetic shield forms a closed-type magnetic field by covering the magnet and the body and forms an appropriate magnetic loop in the vicinity of the sensing mass, so that the crash sensor also acts as a magnetic shield to protect itself from being influenced by outside ferromagnetic bodies and makes effective use of the magnetic force of the magnet. The above pair of strips are fitted in the same direction vertically on the inner wall of the body, whereby they do not project out in the axial direction so that the crash sensor can be of a reduced whole length, as well as of smaller outside diameter than conventional crash sensor with its contacts positioned facing each other.

A master/slave fluid-pressure apparatus having a first valve respective to angular movement of a master arm for producing fluid pressure which is applied as a pilot pressure to shift a closed-center three-position directional valve in one direction, which then allows a fluid-pressure actuator to be operated to cause a slave arm to follow the master arm in angular motion. The angular movement of the slave arm actuates a second valve coacting therewith to develop a fluid pressure which is applied as another pilot pressure to the directional valve. When the fluid pressure from the second valve reaches a predetermined point, the directional valve is shifted in the opposite direction to stop operation of the fluid-pressure actuator. The first and second valves may either be pressure reducing valves or relief valves.
