A nosebar is supported by supports arranged along the longitudinal direction, and the supports are assembled to fixtures to swing independently of each other in a direction away from a log according to the reaction force of the pressing force acting on the supports. Thus, when a knife peels a knot part of the log or a fragment of the log enters a cutting edge, the portion of the nosebar pressing the knot part or corresponding to the location where the fragment enters the cutting edge is greatly deformed, while the deformation of the nosebar in the other portions is kept small. A corner of the nosebar is prevented from contacting the peeled portion of the raw wood and generating a gap when the nosebar is bent and deformed.

Knife carriage, a rotary veneer lathe having the same, and a veneer slicer having the same

A knife assembly for use in a veneer cutting machine such as a rotary veneer lathe and a veneer slicer includes a knife blade, a knife blade holder and a knife adjusting bolt with a lock nut. The knife blade holder includes a holder block having formed therethrough a threaded hole through which the knife adjusting bolt is adjustably inserted. The holder block has a first support surface that is in supporting contact with a part of one surface of the knife blade on the side thereof where a bevel face of the knife blade is formed and a second support surface that is in supporting contact with a part of a base end surface located opposite from and extending parallel to a cutting edge of the knife blade.

Knife assembly

A method of cutting a wood block and a veneer lathe are disclosed. Two groups of first plural contact members and second plural contact members disposed around the wood block for supporting the wood block from the periphery thereof and each having a contact portion contactable with periphery of the wood block. The first and the second contact members are spaced away from each other along the spin axis of the wood block so as to form a space between any two adjacent contact members, respectively, and arranged in such a way that a part of the contact member of one group is insertable into the space between any two adjacent contact members of the other group when the wood block is cut to a predetermined reduced diameter so that the wood block is continued to be supported further.

Method of cutting a wood block and veneer lathe

Method for manufacturing diagonal plywood is disclosed. The method uses a rectangular-shaped plywood board or a joined plywood board made of a plurality of plywood boards having the same thickness and joined together into a rectangular shape is prepared. The rectangular-shaped board or joined board is cut diagonally with respect to any pair of parallel sides of the board along diagonal parallel lines spaced at a predetermined interval into a plurality of cut boards having a shape of parallelogram or trapezoid. Subsequently, the cut boards are joined together side-to-side into a joined elongated board in such a way that the opposite parallel sides thereof form the elongated sides of the resulting joined elongated board. The joined elongated board is cut across the elongated sides thereof into a plurality of rectangular-shaped boards of any desired dimension.

Method for manufacturing diagonal plywood

An apparatus for centering a log to allow an optimum yield axis and a maximum radius of rotation of the log to be calculated more accurately than conventionally possible. The angle of rotation of a log M is detected by a rotation angle detector that is engaged with a preliminary axis c about which the log M is rotated. A contour of the log for calculating the optimum yield axis of the log and a contour for calculating the maximum radius of rotation of the log are measured separately. The contour for calculating the optimum yield axis is measured in a fixed-point manner by measuring the log at a plurality of certain measurement points with beam reflection scanners. The contour for calculating the maximum radius of rotation is measured in a comprehensive manner using swing-angle detectors engaged with contact-swinging detection members provided individually in the plural measurement sections.

Method and apparatus for centering a log

A method of cutting a wood block for production of veneer by a rotary veneer lathe. The veneer lathe includes a veneer knife, a number of rotatable peripheral drive wheels placed parallel to the veneer knife and each having a number of tooth-like projections pierceable into a wood block for driving the wood block for rotation about its axis, and a guide member for guiding veneer peeled from the wood block. The cutting of the wood block is done at a first position of the peripheral drive wheels where the veneer peeled from the wood block is pierced by the projections to such an extent that substantial splits are formed in the veneer along wood grain thereof, and also at a second position where the projections provide no force to the veneer moving past the guide member that causes the substantial splits in the veneer.

Veneer lathe and method of cutting wood block by the veneer lathe

A peeler block is formed previously on its opposite end faces with markings the centers of which define an optimum axis about which the block should be rotated for achieving maximum yield in peeling veneer from the block in a rotary veneer lathe. An apparatus is disclosed herein which is designed to detecting such markings at two different detecting stations and finally positioning the block such that its optimum axis is set parallel to the axes of spindles of a rotary veneer lathe is disclosed. At the first station, the markings are detected by a first pair of image sensors such as CCD cameras having lenses with a short focal length hence wide-angle viewing capability. After the detection, the block P is transferred to the second detecting station under the control by a computer control in such a way that the detected respective markings may reach predetermined positions at the second detecting station, where the markings are detected by a second pair of image sensors having lenses with a long focal length for high resolution capability so that the markings are detected with increased accuracy. The block P is further transferred to a third station under the control of the computer control so that it can be positioned at the third station with the optimum axis of the block P expending substantially in parallel to the axes of the lathe spindles.

Apparatus for detecting markings on opposite end faces of a wood block

A peripherally driven veneer lathe employs a knife with an improved shape which increases the deflection resistance of the cutting edge and improves its cutting ability. A cutting edge ( ) is positioned on the flank side a predetermined distance (H) away from a point (X) of intersection of an extended plane of a cutting face ( ) and that of a flank ( ) of a knife ( ) toward the downstream of the rotation of a log. Peripherally driven veneer lathe

A veneer lathe comprising a piercing roller and a guiding member for producing a veneer which is free from piercing scars. Veneer lathe

A nose bar device for a veneer lathe which is equipped with a knife carriage movable toward and away from a log from which a veneer sheet is cut, and a knife mounted on the knife carriage and having at the tip end thereof a cutting edge extending horizontally across the direction in which the knife carriage is moved. The lathe further includes a plurality of nose bars juxtaposed along the cutting edge of the knife and mounted to a block which forms a part the knife carriage and is adapted to be movable independently of the knife carriage. Each nose bar has at the lower end thereof a pressure edge located adjacent to the cutting edge of the knife for pressing against the log periphery adjacent to the knife cutting edge. There is provided a mechanism for independently adjustably moving the pressure edge of at least one of the nose bars toward and away from the cutting edge of the knife.

Veneer cutting machine and nose bar device therefor

A veneer reeling apparatus for winding a veneer sheet around a freely rotatable take-up reel into a veneer roll. Veneer sheet is transferred by a plurality of spaced conveyer belts extending below the take-up reel. The take-up reel is removably supported by movable reel carriages for movement therewith toward and away from the conveyer belts. Each belts is urged toward the take-up reel to be kept in resiliently pressing contact with veneer roll for friction driving. There is provided a detector for monitoring an increment in diameter of the veneer roll during reeling operation and generating a signal in response to the detection of a predetermined amount of increment in the roll diameter and for detecting the force with which a roll member presses against the veneer roll and for generating a signal upon detection of a predetermined force in response to an increase in diameter of the veneer roll. A control responding to the signal from the detector provides a command signal to move the reel carriages hence the take-up reel carried thereby upward or away from the belt so as to compensate for the increment in diameter of the veneer roll.

Veneer reeling apparatus

A veneer reeling apparatus for winding a veneer sheet into a veneer roll comprising a freely rotatable take-up reel around which the veneer sheet is wound into the veneer roll, and an array of spaced conveyer belts extending below the take-up reel for advancing the veneer sheet toward the take-up reel. Veneer sheet is transferred by the plurality conveyer belts which include two groups of such belts and extending below the take-up reel. Air cylinder is provided for each belt to provide a first force to urge the belt toward the take-up reel so as to keep the belt in resiliently pressing contact with the veneer roll. The air cylinders are operable to changeably provide the first force to one group of belts and a second force, which is smaller than the first force, to the other group of belts, and vice versa. A control is provided to effect alternate changing between the first and second pressures in the first and second groups of belts whenever the belts have moved a predetermined distance.

A method of controlling the clearance angle of a veneer knife in a veneer lathe under a spindleless condition is applied to a veneer lathe that includes the veneer knife, at least three rollers, feed mechanisms coupled to at least two of the rollers for feeding the rollers, and a drive system coupled to at least one of the rollers for rotatably driving thereof, wherein the rollers to which the drive system is coupled supplies all the driving force required for rotating the log while each roller to which the feed mechanism is coupled are fed to hold the log while the log is peeled by the veneer knife. The method comprises the steps of setting a shifting amount based on a predetermined reduction in the diameter of the log from a predetermined first diameter to a predetermined second diameter and automatically shifting the rotational axis of the log in the direction perpendicular to the plane extending between the rotational axis of the log and the cutting edge of the veneer knife by the shifting amount during veneer peeling.
