Mid-infrared photothermal heterodyne imaging (MIR-PHI) techniques described herein overcome the diffraction limit of traditional MIR imaging and uses visible photodiodes as detectors. MIR-PHI experiments are shown that achieve high sensitivity, sub-diffraction limit spatial resolution, and high acquisition speed. Sensitive, affordable, and widely applicable, photothermal imaging techniques described herein can serve as a useful imaging tool for biological systems and other submicron-scale applications.

Photothermal imaging device and system

Provided are nanowire-coated fibers and compositions comprising one or more nanowire-coated fibers and methods of making the fibers and compositions. The fibers can be organic or inorganic fibers. The nanowires can be metallic or semiconducting nanowires. The nanowires are disposed on at least a portion of a surface of a fiber or fibers. The fibers and compositions can be used as barcodes (e.g., for anti-counterfeiting methods). The fibers and compositions also can be used as photodetectors (e.g., methods of detecting electromagnetic radiation).

The invention provides a method for assembling semiconducting nanowires, which method can include providing a mixture comprising a dielectric solvent and two or more semiconducting nanowires, wherein the semiconducting nanowires can be the same or different; exposing the mixture to an electrostatic charge under lighting conditions; and allowing macroscopic nanowire alignment to occur, wherein each nanowire is substantially oriented along the direction of the applied electric field.
