A digital camera includes a CCD imager. In a successive picture-taking mode, each time a subject is taken by the CCD imager, a corresponding main image signal is compressed by a JPEG CODEC. The compressed main image signals produced upon each picture taking are accumulated in a SDRAM. A compression process of thumbnail image signals is performed after completing successive picture taking by the CCD imager. That is, each of the compressed main image signals secured in the SDRAM is decompressed by the JPEG CODEC, a thumbnail image signal is produced on the basis of a decompressed image signal so that a produced thumbnail image signal is compressed by the JPEG CODEC. When all the compressed thumbnail image signals are produced, each of a compressed main image signal and compressed thumbnail image signal is recorded onto a memory card.

To provide this electronic photographing device, this invention includes a recording medium ( ), an operation switch ( , or the like) for selecting predetermined image data from the image data corresponding to a plurality of images recorded on the recording medium ( ), a calendar signal generation circuit ( ) for generating a calendar signal, a liquid-crystal display unit ( ) for displaying an image corresponding to the image data selected by the operation switch and a calendar image corresponding to the calendar signal generated by the calendar signal generation circuit, an operation member for setting the display form of the image and the calendar image displayed on the liquid-crystal display unit into a predetermined form, and a recording medium control circuit ( ) for recording image data corresponding to an image obtained by synthesizing the image and the calendar image displayed on the liquid-crystal display unit on the recording medium.

Electronic photographing device

A digital camera includes a memory card. Title image data and photograph image data are compressed according to a JPEG format so that compressed data thereof are recorded in the same memory card. When the title image data and the photograph image data are combined into composite image data, the composite image data is also compressed according to the JPEG format and recorded into the same memory card. That is, the title image data, the photograph image data and the composite image data are compressed according to the same format, and their compressed data are recorded in the same memory card.

An image data compression apparatus capable of reducing false color in image data to a minimum when image compression or decompression is performed, including a preliminary image compressing portion for compressing image data in a sampling region set in a specific position on an image plane for obtaining preliminary compressed image data; a data size evaluation value calculating portion for calculating a data size evaluation value from a data length of said preliminary compressed image data; a compression ration determining portion for determining compression ratios of the image data to color and luminance data in accordance with the data size evaluation value such that a data size of compressed image when image compression is performed for the entire image plane of the image data equals to a prescribed desired data size and such that the compression ratio of the image data to the color data equals to or exceeds the compression ratio of the image data to the luminance data; and an image compressing portion for performing image compression for the entire image plane of the image data in accordance with the compression ratios of the image data to the color and luminance data. Also included are a method of compressing image data and a digital camera using the image compression apparatus.
