[Problem] To suppress increases in the resistance of nickel positive electrodes and assure sufficient battery capacity even after repeated pulse charging and discharging cycles with a large current. [Solution] This alkaline storage battery () contains aluminum (Al) in a hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode () and also includes Al in a nickel positive electrode (). In a state where a prescribed charging and discharging cycle has completed, the Al content in the nickel positive electrode () is 0.25% by mass or greater of that in the positive electrode active material, and in powder x-ray diffraction of the positive electrode active material using Cu&#x2014;K&#x3b1;, the half-width of the (101) plane peak for Ni(OH)is controlled so as to be 0.5 (&#xb0;/2&#x3b8;) or greater.

Alkaline storage battery

To provide a hydrogen storage alloy for an alkaline storage battery that improves output power by pulverization of the alloy in the initial stage of partial charge and discharge cycles and that maintains its surface condition to improve the amount of lifetime work (Wh), and an alkaline storage battery and battery system. A hydrogen storage alloy for an alkaline storage battery includes a composition expressed by LaReMgNiAlT(Re: rare earth element(s) including Y; T: Co, Mn, Zn; 0.17&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.64, 3.5&#x2266;n&#x2266;3.8, 0.06&#x2266;m&#x2266;0.22, v&#x2267;0), and a main phase of an ABtype crystal structure. A ratio of X/Y of the concentration ratio X of Al to Ni in a surface layer and the concentration ratio Y of Al to Ni in a bulk layer is 0.36&#x2266;X/Y&#x2266;0.85. An alkaline storage battery includes the hydrogen storage alloy in its negative electrode. An alkaline storage battery system performs partial charge and discharge control.

Hydrogen storage alloy for alkaline storage battery, and alkaline storage battery and alkaline storage battery system each including negative electrode having the alloy

Disclosed is an alkaline storage battery comprising a negative electrode, a positive electrode, a separator and an alkaline electrolyte solution in a package can. The negative electrode contains a hydrogen storage alloy represented by the following general formula: LnMg(NiT)(wherein Ln represents at least one element selected from lanthanoid elements, Ca, Sr, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr and Hf; T represents at least one element selected from V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Al, Ga, Zn, Sn, In, Cu, Si, P and B; and 0&#x3c;x&#x2266;1, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.5 and 2.5&#x2266;z&#x2266;4.5) as a negative electrode active material. In this alkaline storage battery, the hydrogen equilibrium pressure (P) is regulated to satisfy 0.02 MPa&#x2266;P&#x2266;0.11 MPa when the hydrogen amount stored in the hydrogen storage alloy (H/M (atomic ratio)) at 40&#xb0; C. is 0.5.

A hydrogen storage alloy used in a hydrogen storage alloy electrodehas a crystalline structure having a mixed phase made up of at least an ABtype structure and an ABtype structure, and a surface layer of hydrogen storage alloy particles is so formed as to have a nickel content ratio greater than that of a bulk. The ratio (X/Y) of the nickel content ratio X (% by mass) of the surface layer to the nickel content ratio Y (% by mass) of the bulk is greater than 1.0 but no more than 1.2 (1.0&#x3c;X/Y&#x2266;1.2). The gradient between the content ratio of the nickel in the surface layer of the hydrogen storage alloy particles and the content ratio of the nickel in the bulk is alleviated and a hydrogen storage alloy electrode with high output characteristics is obtained.

Hydrogen storage alloy electrode and alkaline storage battery using the same

An alkaline storage battery system according to an aspect of the present invention, with which a partial charging-discharging is performed, includes an alkaline storage batteryincluding an electrode group having a nickel positive electrode, a hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode, a separator; an alkaline electrolyte; and an outer canaccommodating the electrode group and the alkaline electrolyte, and further includes a partial charge-discharge control unit for controlling charging-discharging of the battery. In addition, zinc (Zn) is added to nickel hydroxide that is a main positive electrode active material in the nickel positive electrodewith an addition amount of 5% by mass or less with respect to the mass of nickel in the positive electrode active material. The concentration of the alkaline electrolyte is 6.5 mol/L or less and the content of lithium in the alkaline electrolyte is 0.3 mol/L or more.

Alkaline storage battery system

To provide a hydrogen storage alloy for an alkaline battery capable of having high performance of power characteristics much more beyond the related-art range, and a production method thereof, as well as an alkaline battery by investigating the constituent ratios of the AB-type structure and the AB-type structure. The hydrogen storage alloy for an alkaline battery of the present invention includes: an element R selected from the Group IV and the rare earth elements including Y and excluding La; and an element M consisting of at least one of Co, Mn, and Zn. The hydrogen storage alloy is represented by general formula: LaRMgNiAlM(wherein &#x3b1;, &#x3b2;, &#x3b3;, &#x3b7;, &#x3b5; satisfy numerical formulae: 0&#x2266;&#x3b1;&#x2266;0.5, 0.1&#x2266;&#x3b2;&#x2266;0.2, 3.7&#x2266;&#x3b3;&#x2266;3.9, 0.1&#x2266;&#x3b7;&#x2266;0.3, 0&#x2266;&#x3b5;&#x2266;0.2); and the constituent ratio of the AB-type structure is 40% or more in the crystal structure thereof.

Hydrogen storage alloy for alkaline battery and production method thereof, as well as alkaline battery

A negative electrode plate of a nickel hydrogen storage battery includes a nonaqueous polymer binder and has an effective surface area per unit capacity of 70 cm/Ah or more. The density of the first and second separators between positive and negative electrode plates ranges from 450 kg/mto 600 kg/m. The nonwoven fabrics of the separators are formed by combining microfibers and compound fibers through melting portions of the compound fibers. The fibers have a virtually circular cross-section. The microfibers and the compound fibers have a diameter ranging from 1 &#x3bc;m to less than 5 &#x3bc;m and a diameter ranging from 5 &#x3bc;m to 15 &#x3bc;m, respectively. The proportion of the microfibers to whole fibers ranges from 10 percent by mass to 20 percent by mass. At least one of the nonwoven fabrics of the separators is subjected to sulfonation treatment.

Nickel hydrogen storage battery

A manufacturing method for a sintered substrate of alkaline batteries is provided. The manufacturing method includes a first step for mixing particles with a pore former and applying the mixture to a porous substrate, and a second step for sintering the porous substrate and the applied mixture. The particles are made of nickel or principally made of nickel, and the surfaces of the pore former particles each have a coating made of nickel or principally made of nickel. The pore former can be made from resin or any other materials if it disappears when sintered. The pore former particles should preferably have a spheric shape, but is does not matter whether the pore former particles are solid or hollow. Using such sintered substrate for an electrode, an alkaline storage battery can exhibit a high performance.

Manufacturing method for sintered substrate of alkaline storage battery

In a rectangular alkaline storage battery, the sides of negative cores of negative electrode plates , which are disposed at the outermost positions of the group of electrode plates and oppose an outer casing can , are exposed. The pore ratios (ratio of total area taken up by pores to area of electrode plate) of the exposed cores must be made lower than those of the other unexposed cores. The pore ratio of the exposed negative core is specified as falling within a range of 10% to 40%. As a result, the negative electrode plates are improved in binding strength, thereby inhibiting exfoliation of an active material. Further, there can be obtained a large rectangular alkaline storage battery which has superior permeability for a gas which would arise in the battery, an improved capacity ratio, and greater volumetric energy density.

Rectangular alkaline storage battery

A porous metal material was filled with an active material slurry, dried, and then rolled to a predetermined thickness. This rolling causes pores formed by a network skeleton to be stretched in the rolling direction (direction represented by the arrow in FIG. ( )) to form pores having a shape similar to ellipsoid or deformed ellipsoid having a long axis. Subsequently, the porous metal material was cut in such an arrangement that the longitudinal direction of the pores having a shape similar to ellipsoid or deformed ellipsoid coincides with the crosswise direction of the electrode plate, and then subjected to roller treatment through a series of rollers in the longitudinal direction of the electrode plate. This roller treatment causes numerous cracks to be formed at a very small pitch in the direction parallel to the rolling direction as shown diagrammatically in FIG. ( ).

Alkaline storage battery and process for the production thereof

A nickel-hydrogen storage battery having improved charge and discharge cycle characteristics even in high temperature, which has a negative electrode comprising a hydrogen absorbing alloy capable of electrochemically storing and releasing hydrogen, a positive electrode comprising nickel hydroxide as a main active material, and an alkaline electrolytic solution mainly comprising an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution, wherein the positive electrode contains a cobalt compound, a yttrium compound, and 100 ppm or more of lithium based on the total weight of the nickel hydroxide, the cobalt compound, and the yttrium compound.

Nickel-hydrogen storage battery and method of producing the same

An active material slurry obtained by a mixing a powder of the active material with a binder and a solvent for the binder is heated to a predetermined temperature inside a slurry reservoir and the heated active material slurry is coated and adhered to an electrically conductive core body The resulting body is then fed inside a drying furnace to dry the coated and adhered active material slurry by heating, and is rolled to a predetermined thickness by passing it through a pair of rolling rolls thereby obtaining an electrode for alkaline batteries comprising an active material layer on the both sides of the electrically conductive core body On drying the active material slurry that is coated and adhered to the electrically conductive core body the transfer of the binder inside the active material slurry is suppressed, such that the decrease in the amount of the binder inside the active material layer in the vicinity of the electrically conductive core body is prevented from occurring. Thus is obtained an electrode for alkaline batteries improved in adhesion strength.

Method for producing electrode for alkali batteries

A sealed type alkaline storage battery in which the entire surface of a positive electrode plate is opposed to a negative electrode plate through a separator, wherein a discharge capacity ratio of the negative electrode plate to the positive electrode plate is determined to be more than or equal to 1.9, an area ratio of the negative electrode plate to the positive electrode plate is determined to be less than or equal to 1.4, and the thickness of the positive electrode plate is determined to be less than or equal to 0.6 mm

Sealed type alkaline storage battery

A cylindrical alkaline storage battery including a group of spiral electrodes composed of positive and negative electrode plates spirally wound with a separator interposed therebetween. A winding end of the positive electrode plate is positioned in a maximum diameter portion of the group of spiral electrodes. The separator is reinforced by an additional separator of the same kind of material adhered thereto at an outside of the winding end of the positive electrode plate.

Cylindrical alkaline storage battery

An alkaline storage battery has a group of spiral electrodes composed of positive and negative electrode plates spirally wound with first and second separators respectively located at the outside of the positive electrode plate and at the inside of the positive electrode plate. The weight per unit area of the first separator is greater than that of the second separator.
