There is provided a document providing system including a derivation relationship registration unit that, when receiving an instruction to register a second electronic-document that is an updated version of a first electronic document, registers a derivation relationship indicating that the second electronic document is derived from the first electronic document in a derivation relationship storage unit; an input-output relationship registration unit that generates input-output relationship information indicating an updated electronic document to be provided in response to a document request that designates a requested electronic document based on the derivation relationship registered in the derivation relationship storage unit and registers the input-output relationship information in an input-output relationship storage unit; and a providing unit that, when receiving a document request, obtains an updated electronic document corresponding to a requested electronic document designated in the document request based on the input-output relationship information and provides the updated electronic document.

A structured document inputted from a document input unit is decomposed into partial structures to be an editing unit in a document processing unit, and global structural information showing a relation between the partial structures is registered into a relational database. The decomposed partial structure is inputted to an editing unit processing unit, and information of elements as element information and a relation between elements in the partial structure as structural information are registered into the relational database. An ancestor-descendant relation between two elements can be determined easily and speedily by determining an ancestor-descendant relation between the partial structures of the global structural information and an ancestor-descendant relation of the structural information of the ancestor partial structure.

A structured document management system for managing a structured document is disclosed, the system including: an element registration unit for registering attribute information and content information about each of elements in the structured document as element information; a structural information registration unit for registering relations between the elements in the structured document as binary format structural information; and an information retaining unit for retaining the element information registered by the element registration unit as records of a relational database while preserving the binary format structural information registered by the structural information registration unit.
