Flexibly controlling the movement, direction or speed of a pointer in a multi-monitor or extended monitor environment is provided. This may include defining a control area in which the pointer is made to operate in a desired manner at a desired position, recording definition data that includes an identification name uniquely identifying the control area, reading the definition data, and controlling the pointer in response to the pointer entering the control area. The pointer controlled in accordance with the control setting corresponding to the control item in the definition data defined for the control area.

A file server for displaying, on a client, files to be retrieved, a method of providing a display on the client, and a computer program product with program instructions executable on the file server. The number of files to be displayed and start point information related to the start point of a file list to be extracted is acquired from a client, and a file list is extracted from files stored as a partitioned data set in a storage device based on the number of files and start point information acquired. The numbers of preceding and succeeding files stored before and behind the extracted file list are calculated, the calculated numbers of the preceding and succeeding files and the extracted file list are sent to the client. The client displays the file list and the received numbers of remaining files before and behind the received file list, respectively.

A technique, specifically apparatus and an accompanying method, for use in, e.g., a 'host' operating system (610), for properly updating a dynamically alterable channel program that controls an input/output (I/O) device so as to emulate a 'guest' computer system, that employs dynamic address translation (DAT) in an I/O channel sub-system (150), on a 'host' computer system (10) that does not. This technique performs this updating in a manner that significantly increases channel throughput so as to substantially reduce a performance degradation that would otherwise result from a lack of channel DAT on the host system. Specifically, our technique relies on program controlled interrupt (PCI) chaining coupled with use of 'just-in-time' translation of each new virtual channel program segment generated by a guest operating system (620) and corresponding updating of channel program (415) then executing on the host computer system.
