A regeneration apparatus comprises a heaterwhich heats a catalystat the time of stopping fuel supply to an engine, a pumpwhich supplies an oxidizing gas or a reducing gas to the heated catalystand a switching valve. In the oxidizing step, catalytic poisons, for example hydrocarbon, which are absorbed on a noble metal are oxidized and removed. The particles of the noble metal become oxidized particles as pure oxide and the like. After the oxidizing step, the reducing step is carried out. Further, the present invention relates to an exhaust gas purifying apparatus comprising a plasma reactor containing at least one of a HO adsorbent and a HC adsorbent, and a NOadsorbent. Still further, the present invention relates to a method using the present apparatus. According to the present apparatus, by generating plasma in the plasma reactor, HO trapped on the HO adsorbent is activated to be a strong oxidant such as OH radical and O radical, and HC trapped on the HC adsorbent is activated to be radicals, lower HCs, etc.
