A magnetic reproducer for reproducing data recorded on a magnetic tape by forming tracks sequentially and obliquely along a longitudinal direction of the magnetic tape, has magnetic heads for reproducing the information by sequentially scanning the tracks formed on the magnetic tape with a first track width for a first recording system or a second track width for a second recording system wider than that for the first recording system. And, a gap width between the magnetic heads is set at a value which is wider than the first track width and narrower than the second track width.

In the case of successively and obliquely forming tracks along the longitudinal direction of a second magnetic tape having a width wider than a first magnetic tape and continuously recording recording data for at least two tracks in a digital recording format on each track, each track is to be formed at a predetermined track pitch set based on the recording time and the reproduction signal characteristic. Thereby, recording data based on the digital recording format which is applied to the first magnetic tape can keep a practically sufficient C/N ratio and can be recorded on the second magnetic tape for a long time. A recording and reproducing apparatus which receives character broadcasting information transmitted via a vertical blanking period of audio/video signals. The apparatus detects certain information from the received data, including a prefix portion and character information. The character information is screened for desired information which is then separated from the remaining broadcasting information based on the detected information, such as the prefix portion. The separated data is then recorded in a separate area on the recording track. Video data is recorded in a first area and audio data is recorded in a second area on the recording track. The character broadcasting information is reproduced by inserting the reproduced desired character information into the vertical blanking period of reproduced video data.

Method and apparatus for selectively recording character broadcasting

Apparatus and method for recording digital video and audio data on a record medium receives digital video and audio data and topic data having identifying topics, and generates menu data in accordance with those identifying topics. The video and audio data, topic data and menu data are recorded on a record medium in the form of a coded signal having the recording format comprised of respective video, audio and subcode areas in which the video data, the audio data and the menu data, respectively, are provided. The video and audio areas have respective auxiliary areas in which the topic data is provided. In addition, auxiliary character data is generated when character information is received by a teletext broadcast system and recorded in the auxiliary areas of the video and audio areas of each track.
