Aspects of the invention provide a color matching profile generating device that, in an apparatus having an input device and an output device, performs a color matching for the input device and the output device and reproduces favorable colors without depending on color characteristics of the devices. The color matching profile generating device can use an input device profile and an output device profile, in addition to a color conversion profile which defines color conversion characteristics in an absolute color space and generates a color matching profile for the input device and the output device. Since the color conversion profile defines the color conversion characteristics in the absolute color space, color conversion can be performed to image data obtained from the input device without depending on characteristics of the input device. Accordingly, by performing a color matching process with the generated color conversion profile, image data can be output with color characteristics determined in the absolute color space, irregardless of characteristics of the output device.

An aspect of the invention provides an image display apparatus that displays a plurality of input pixels which form input image data on a display section. In that case, each input pixel can be displayed in such a manner that display pixels having gradation values differing from the gradation value of the input pixel are combined. For example, when a pixel having a particular gradation value exists as an input pixel, the pixel is not displayed on the display section as it is being kept at the gradation value, but instead, is displayed in such a manner that a plurality of display pixels having gradation values differing from the gradation value of the input pixel are combined. As a result, the same gradation value is not displayed continuously. Therefore, this results in that the occurrence of crosstalk, which is problematical particularly in a TFD liquid-crystal panel, is reduced. Accordingly, the invention can remove crosstalk which is likely to occur in a TFD liquid-crystal panel by controlling the gradation level of a display image.

The invention provides an easy and simple method of converting the resolution of image data, which is capable of generating the high-resolution image data without incongruity, does not make a circuit in the display device complicated and does not increase the power consumption. This invention can include a portable terminal device, such as a mobile telephone or a PDA, that processes and displays image data transmitted from the outside. Image data with a plurality of grayscales can be displayed by controlling the display state of each pixel in a display unit in accordance with grayscale control pulses corresponding to the number of grayscales. For example, when a 64 grayscale display is performed, a grayscale level is defined using sixty four grayscale control pulses. Thus, it is possible to emit light from pixels in the display unit by sixty four grayscale levels. Further, the resolution converting device can generate pseudo-high-resolution image data obtained by increasing the number of pixels of original image data by n multiplication and by reducing the number of grayscales of the original image data to 1/n. When displaying the pseudo-high-resolution image data, the number of grayscale control pulses is changed to 1/n by a halftone controller. That is, in the pseudo-high-resolution image data, the number of grayscales is 1/n. Therefore, the number of grayscale control pulses used for halftone display may be 1/n in accordance with the number of grayscales. Therefore, the low-resolution image data can be displayed without incongruity by converting the resolution, also, it is possible to reduce power consumption of the display unit by the reduced amount of the number of grayscale levels pulses.

The invention naturally enhances the sharpness of an image by performing appropriate sharpness processing. An image processing device receives input original image data, performs sharpness processing, and outputs correction image data. Specifically, the degree of the level change is detected from the original image data, and correction-reference-amount data, which provides a reference to determine the degree of sharpness correction, is determined based on the degree of the detected level change. Meanwhile, the relationship between correction amount by which the sharpness correction is performed and the correction reference amount is defined by a predetermined correction-amount characteristic pattern. The correction-amount calculating device calculates an adequate correction amount in accordance with the correction-amount characteristic pattern, and the sharpness processing means performs sharpness processing on the original image data in accordance with the correction amount. In this case, the correction determining pattern has a characteristic that the correction amount varies in accordance with the magnitude of the correction reference amount. Thus, in accordance with a level change in the original image data, the sharpness correction is performed by an adequate correction amount, which can sharpen the original image data to an adequate degree.

The present invention provides a system of transmitting image data from a server via a network or another communication path to a cellular phone or another terminal. In order to enhance the picture quality of displayed images, the system causes input image data to be subjected to a tone correction process and a halftoning process according to display characteristics of the terminal. Image processing packages are provided in both the server and the terminal. The system selectively uses these image processing packages according to their processing capacities. The server determines execution or non-execution of image processing according to the type of the terminal. When any image processing is carried out in the server, a control signal representing execution of the image processing is mapped to the processed image data and transmitted to the terminal. The terminal determines requirement of further image processing in response to the control signal and carries out a required series of image processing, which has not been executed by the server. In this system, at least either one of the server and the terminal takes charge of the image processing to enhance the picture quality. Execution of the image processing by the device having the higher image processing capacity effectively improves the processing efficiency.
