An image capturing system is provided which includes a detection section for detecting a position of an capturing section capable of performing a pan operation and a tilt operation, a determination section for determining which coordinate system is used, either a first coordinate system representing the position of the capturing section in the pan direction and the tilt direction or a second coordinate system representing a position of a subject image of the subject captured by the capturing section in a screen, and a coordinate calculator for calculating coordinates representing the position of the capturing section in the first coordinate system based on the detected position of the capturing section when using the first coordinate system, and calculating coordinates representing the position of the subject image in the second coordinate system based on the detected position of the capturing section when using the second coordinate system.

An imaging apparatus acquires and displays an image of a subject such that a target subject remains displayed on a monitor even after performing an area zoom operation. An imaging unit acquires a subject image at a variable subject acquisition magnification and acquisition angle. A controller conducts an area zoom control such that, when a given area is specified as a sub-area of a predetermined image display region, the acquisition magnification and angle are modified to enlarge the given area. A limiting magnification is also set as the zoom magnification when the ratio of the dimensions of the predetermined display region with respect to the given area exceeds the limiting magnification. When the limiting magnification is not exceeded, the ratio of the dimensions is set as the zoom magnification.

An amount-of-compressed-data control method applicable to image data compression processing for compressing an amount of data is disclosed. The method includes the steps of: performing quantization by: dividing one digital image into multiple blocks each having n&#xd7;n pixels; performing orthogonal transform on each block; and dividing n&#xd7;n conversion coefficients resulting from the conversion by each threshold value of a quantization matrix including n&#xd7;n threshold values each resulting from the multiplication of a predetermined coefficient S (where S is a positive real number); and variable-length encoding the quantized data. In this method, the value of the coefficient S allows the amount of compressed data to fit within a predetermined range of a target amount of data by performing the quantization and encoding by dividing the interval that the coefficient S can take on into multiple intervals and calculating the estimated value of the coefficient S based on the relationship between the amount of compressed image data and the coefficient S, which is defined for each of the divided intervals.

An echo canceller used in a vocal information exchange system operates in such a circumstance that a sound wave released by a speaker is picked up by a microphone unintentionally and works to suppress an echo signal included in the audio signal produced by the microphone by using a pseudo echo signal which is produced based on the incoming audio signal to be fed to the speaker and produce a subtracted audio signal which becomes the outgoing audio signal, with the echo signal being suppressed based on the accurately-calculated degree of echo suppression achieved by use of the pseudo echo signal.
