A cutting insert includes a leading cutting edge having a rake angle in the range of 20&#xb0; to 35&#xb0; in a central region in a width direction; and a rake face having a breaker groove formed in the central region in the width direction and land portions formed in both end regions in the width direction. The land portions have a rake angle smaller than the rake angle in the central region in the width direction. The breaker groove includes opposing side faces separated from each other by a distance that decreases with increasing distance from the leading cutting edge and four shoulder portions of the same height that are formed on the opposing side faces at positions above the land portions, two of the shoulder portions being closer to the leading cutting edge and to outer sides in the width direction than the other two shoulder portions are.

An object of the present invention is to configure a cutting-off processing tool that includes a cutting edge angled at an end cutting edge angle and causes evacuation of chips to be controlled so that the chips are evacuated in the tool axis direction, thereby reducing concerns about damage to a processed surface by the chips. The cutting-off processing tool includes a cutting edge angled at the end cutting edge angle. In the cutting-off processing tool, an upper surface has a shape laterally asymmetric about a center in a width direction. In order to perform turning operations of the kind that has heretofore been performed by diamond-shaped inserts, an insert which is basically equilateral triangular in shape with multiple alternately usable cutting edges, of which all three corners are usable as cutting edges, without decreasing the positional accuracy of the cutting edge during cutting. At least one recess and a plurality of protrusions are formed on each side of the insert. The recess and protrusions formed on the insert are brought into engagement with a protrusion and recesses formed on a side wall of a seating groove formed in a holder. In this state, the insert is pressed against a bottom seating face and the side wall of the seating groove with a clamp as a means to stably restrain the insert. This prevents shifting of the cutting edge during cutting even if the direction of the cutting force changes.

An object is to provide a vibration suppressing cutting tool which is inexpensive and can damp chattering extremely effectively, and which is simple in structure and is applicable to a wide variety of machining diameters and cutting conditions. The shankof the holderis formed with a pocket. In the pocket, a vibration suppressing pieceis received so as to be movable relative to the holderand not protrudable from the pocket. Under kinetic energy from the holder during cutting, the vibration suppressing piecealternately knocks against a pair of opposed inner wall surfacesandof the pocket along its surface, along a plurality of lines or on a plurality of points when the holder vibrates during cutting, thereby damping vibrations of the holder.
