A method for lighting a flat fluorescent lamp for a large-sized backlight unit is disclosed, to prevent a discharge interference (scattering in fluorescent discharge) when lighting a plurality of groups of cylindrical electrodes being adjacent, in which an A.C. voltage is applied to one or two groups of cylindrical electrodes through introduction wires for lighting lamp in state of being not applied to adjacent one or two groups of cylindrical electrodes, so the plurality of groups of cylindrical electrodes are sequentially switched on and off in a time-division method at a speed not to generate the flicker of lamp.

Method for lighting flat fluorescent lamp

A flat fluorescent lamp is disclosed, wherein rows of U-shaped grooves are formed in a front glass substrate, rows of wavy parallel grooves are formed in a rear glass substrate, and the U-shaped grooves and the wavy parallel groves are made to be perpendicular to each other. Also, fluorescent substance coating films are interposed so as to be in contact with each other on the inner surfaces, and this realizes a structure resistant to an external air pressure. Furthermore, fluorescent discharge is produced inside a tunnel-shaped cavity between the rows of U-shaped grooves, and reduction in luminance at the lower side of the U-shaped grooves is compensated by illumination of the wall of the U-shaped grooves, where the reduction in brightness is due to non-illuminating sections being caused because the U-shaped grooves and the wavy parallel grooves are in contact with each other. Thus, a flat fluorescent lamp with uniform surface luminance is realized. Further, a heater wire is formed on the lower side in the lamp to heat and vaporize mercury received on the lower side in the lamp, realizing a flat fluorescent lamp capable of illuminating brightly even at a low temperature.

An object of the invention is to provide a thin flat light source device for illumination use such as for a back-illumination of an LCD display etc. which is obtained by thinning a light-guiding plate even when it is illuminated by a multi-colored source. A rear surface of the light-guiding plate 1 having a planar front light-emitting surface 2 is worked by a tapered knurling method to form a light-diffusing surface 3. Two discharge tubes are disposed as light sources outside a side surface 4 of the light-guiding plate 1 in parallel to the light-emitting surface 2 as well as to the side surface 4 so that a virtual plane defined by both central axes of the two tubes intersects substantially perpedicularly the side surface 4. One of the discharge tubes located inside is a red neon tube 5 formed of a transparent glass while another of the discharge tubes located outside is a cold cathode fluorescent tube 6 which emits a desirable luminescent color except for the red. A reflecting plate 7 is disposed enclosing those discharge tubes.

A method for manufacturing a metal halide lamp in which tungsten coils are made to have diameters wider than the outer diameters of electrodes, and to have a coil pitch sufficient to prevent molten quartz glass from entering therebetween; and after the tungsten coils have been fixed around the electrodes, the pitch of the tungsten coils on the sides of the electrodes which are nearest molybdenum foils is extended by dragging a part of the tungsten coils toward the discharge ends of the electrodes to fix it tightly around the electrodes. As a result, when sealing is performed with quartz glass bulb, gaps between the electrodes and the glass bulb are provided on the discharge sides of the electrodes, whereby it can be prevented to occur cracks in the quartz glass bulb due to the thermal expansion of the electrodes; and on the molybdenum foil sides of the electrodes, the quartz glass bulb contacts the electrodes, thereby preventing peeling-off and accumulation of sealed material.

A neon discharge lamp provided with a powder coating with an appropriate particle size of used powder, is applied on an inner surface of a tubular bulb to the extent nearly equal to or more the length of an electrode portion, along the longitudinal axis of said tubular bulb. The phenomenon of neon gas being encompassed by way of cathode sputtering is prevented and the shortened operating life of the neon discharge lamp of this kind by way of cathode sputtering is also prevented.

A power-saving discharge lamp 1 wherein gap control material 6 is provided in a clearance between an internal bulb 2 and an external bulb 5, having a smaller thickness than the dimension of the clearance. Nonuniformity of the clearance between the both bulbs caused by difficulties in supporting the internal bulb 2 while welding the external bulb 5 is eliminated and a suitable clearance is automatically provided by the gap control material 6 to prevent degradation of the heat insulation effect.

A cold-cathode fluorescent lamp includes an opposing pair of electrodes in spaced relationship in a tubular glass bulb of which the inner wall surface is coated with fluorescent material, and each of the electrodes is divided into four plate-like electrode members each having mercury and getter preliminarily coated thereon while maintaining a necessary area for each electrode without any contact with the inner wall surface of the tubular glass bulb. The opposite ends of the tubular glass bulb are airtightly sealed with beads through which electricity feeding wires extend for feeding electricity to the electrodes while holding the electrodes in the tubular glass bulb. Two of the four plate-like electrode members are located on one side of each electricity feeding wire, while another two of the same are located on the opposite side of the same. The respective plate-like electrode members are spot-welded to each electricity feeding wire. With this construction, the length of each electrode as measured in the axial direction of the tubular glass bulb can be shortened, and moreover, the length of a non-illuminating part of the cold-cathode fluorescent lamp can also be shortened. Consequently, the whole length of the foregoing type of cold-cathode fluorescent lamp can be shortened. Each of the electricity feeding wires may fully be composed of a Dumet wire.

A method is provided for forming a color filter for a liquid crystal display apparatus which requires considerably reduced area on a transparent substrate for performing electrodeposition of the color filter. The method includes coating non-extended liquid crystal driving terminal portions with a protective film with a notch etched therein for exposing an end edge portion of the non-extended driving terminal; and coating the non-extended driving terminals with a transverse strip of conductive material to place the non-extended terminals into a conducting state.

The stretched sheet has a positive optical anisotropy along the stretched direction. The sheet after heat and pressure treatment has a negative optical anisotropy along the normal to the sheet.

A multilayered liquid crystal display device includes a front substrate, a rear substrate and at least one intermediate substrate interposed therebetween, respective spaces being formed between the intermediate substrate and the front substrate, and between the intermediate substrate and the rear substrate. The present invention relates to a socket for mounting a small electric lamp having two lead wires extending from a base of the electric lamp, such as a wedge base electric lamp, on a printed circuit board. The socket is so constructed that in mounting the electric lamp, the printed circuit board is firmly held between projections disposed on a drum portion of the socket and a resilient flange portion formed on the bottom end of the drum portion. The lead wires of the lamp are threaded through the socket base and back over the top of the flange portion to contact the printed circuit board.

The present invention relates to socket terminals for a socket into which a wedge base electric lamp is inserted. The socket terminals have a pair of spring portions positioned upwardly of a pair of contact members so that even if lead wires in the electric lamp are not properly bent, the lead wires may be corrected to their proper positions when the electric lamp is inserted into the socket to insure that the contact members may come into contact with the lead wires. The socket terminals have a connecting member or a clamping member to facilitate connections with external lead wires, printed circuit wiring or external cords.
