It is an object of the present invention to provide a compound that can provide a liquid crystal composition with a high T, a high Δn, a low V, a high Δε, a low tan δ, and high storage stability at low temperatures, a liquid crystal composition, as well as a liquid crystal display element, a sensor, a liquid crystal lens, optical communication equipment, and an antenna each using this. Specifically disclosed are a compound represented by the general formula (i) having an ethynylene group (—C≡C—) and an isothiocyanate group (—NCS) and a liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more of the compounds.

A compound having large refractive index anisotropy (Δn), the effect of increasing the phase transition temperature of a liquid crystal phase, and high solubility, and showing large dielectric anisotropy (Δε) in a high frequency region, a composition containing the compound, a liquid crystal composition, and a device using the liquid crystal composition. The compound has large refractive index anisotropy Δn, sufficiently high T, and high compatibility with a liquid crystal composition, and shows large dielectric anisotropy in a high frequency region, and is thus useful for a material of an element of a device such as a high-frequency phase shifter, a phased array antenna, an image recognition device, a distance measuring device, a liquid crystal display device, a liquid crystal lens, a birefringent lens for stereoscopic image display.

The compound is represented by general formula (i). In the compound, in a group K, at least two secondary carbon atoms in an alkyl group (a linear alkyl, halogenated alkyl, or cyanogenated alkyl group having 3 to 40 carbon atoms) are replaced with &#x2014;C(&#x2550;X)&#x2014; and/or &#x2014;CH(&#x2014;CN)&#x2014;, where Xis an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, NH, or NR; in addition, a group A, a group A, or the group Kincludes, as a substituent, at least one P-Sp- group, where Pis a polymerizable group, and SPis a spacer group or a single bond. The liquid crystal composition including the compound represented by general formula (i) can be adsorbed onto substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is held, and, consequently, without the use of an alignment film, liquid crystal molecules can be maintained in a state in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a vertical direction.

The present invention provides a compound represented by the general formula (i), which has a partial structure Krepresented by one of the general formulae (K-1) to (K-6) and has a ring B with at least one P-Sp- group and with at least one R(Rdenotes a linear or branched alkyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or a linear or branched halogenated alkyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, &#x2014;CH&#x2014; in the alkyl or halogenated alkyl group is optionally substituted with &#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;, &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;COO&#x2014;, or &#x2014;OCO&#x2014;, but &#x2014;O&#x2014; is not adjacent to another &#x2014;O&#x2014;). Thus, the compound in a liquid crystal composition adsorbs to substrates between which the liquid crystal composition (a liquid crystal layer) exists. The compound can hold vertically aligned liquid crystal molecules, can improve alignment stability, and can ensure low-temperature storage stability.

The present invention provides a compound represented by the following general formula (I), and provides a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and a device using the liquid crystal composition. The compound of the present invention has a large refractive index anisotropy &#x394;n and a high compatibility with a liquid crystal composition, and exhibits a large dielectric constant anisotropy in a high frequency region; and therefore, it is useful as a material for a device of a high-frequency phase shifter, a phased array antenna, an image recognition device, distance measuring equipment, a liquid crystal display device, a liquid crystal lens, a birefringent lens for stereoscopic image display, or the like.

The present invention provides a compound represented by formula (i), a liquid crystal composition using the compound, and a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition. The compound represented by formula (i) has a partial structure Krepresented by any of general formulas (K-1) to (K-17) and further has ring B having at least two P-Sp- groups. Therefore, when used for a liquid crystal composition, the compound adsorbs to substrates sandwiching the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and allows liquid crystal molecules to be held such that they are aligned in a vertical direction without a PI layer, and improved alignment stability and low-temperature storage stability can be achieved.

Polymerizable compound, and liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device using the same

A compound is represented by general formula (I), a liquid-crystal composition contains this compound, and devices are made using this liquid-crystal composition. Having a large refractive-index anisotropy &#x394;n and a sufficiently high Tni, highly compatible with liquid-crystal compositions, and exhibiting a high dielectric anisotropy in the radio frequency range, the compound is a useful material for RF phase shifters, phased-array antennae, image recognition devices, distance meters, liquid-crystal displays, liquid-crystal lenses, and birefringent lenses for 3D image display, among other devices.

[Object] An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound for use in the manufacture of a PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display device. The polymerizable compound has a sufficiently high polymerization rate. The PSA or PSVA liquid crystal display device has few or no display defects due to a change in pretilt angle, has an adequate pretilt angle, and has high responsiveness. The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display device having the liquid crystal composition. [Solution] The object is achieved by using a liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more polymerizable compounds represented by the general formula (I).

Liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display element

The spontaneous orientation aid for a liquid crystal composition provides storage stability and allows liquid crystal molecules to be vertically aligned without a PI layer when added to a liquid crystal composition. When used in a liquid crystal composition, the spontaneous orientation aid can adsorb to substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and keep the liquid crystal molecules aligned in a vertical direction. The spontaneous orientation aid makes it possible to align liquid crystal molecules without a PI layer (to induce vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules under no applied voltage and to achieve horizontal alignment of the liquid crystal molecules under an applied voltage).

A problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition excellent in vertical alignment and compatibility and to provide a liquid crystal display device produced using the same. The problem is solved by a liquid crystal composition containing one or two or more kinds of self-aligning polymerizable monomers and one or two or more kinds of polymerizable monomers (or polymerizable compounds) having a specific chemical structure, and a liquid crystal display device produced using the same, specifically a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable monomer represented by General Formula (I) and a spontaneously aligning monomer which has a chemical structure different from that of the polymerizable monomer represented by General Formula (I), and has a polar group, and a liquid crystal display device containing the same.

A compound represented by formula (i) has, as Kin the formula (i), a structure represented by any one of formula (K-1) to formula (K-3). When used in a liquid crystal composition, it adheres to substrates which hold the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) therebetween, thereby permitting liquid crystal molecules to be maintained in the state of being aligned in the vertical direction. The liquid crystal composition using the compound enables liquid crystal molecules to be aligned even when the PI layer is not provided (vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules is induced without the voltage applied and horizontal alignment of liquid crystal molecules is realized with the voltage applied). It is possible to provide a polymerizable compound being excellent in storability and capable of uniform vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules with no PI layer provided.

Polymerizable compound and liquid crystal composition

The spontaneous orientation aid for a liquid crystal composition includes a compound having a partial structure represented by formula (i), particularly in which Kis represented by one of formula (K-1) to formula (K-11). When used in a liquid crystal composition, the spontaneous orientation aid can adsorb to substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and keep the liquid crystal molecules aligned in a vertical direction. The spontaneous orientation aid makes it possible to align liquid crystal molecules without a PI layer (to induce vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules under no applied voltage and to achieve horizontal alignment of the liquid crystal molecules under an applied voltage).

There is provided a polymerizable composition, by which discoloration or alignment defects are less likely to occur when a filmy polymer, which is obtained by adding a polymerizable compound to the polymerizable composition and polymerizing this composition, is irradiated with ultraviolet light. There are also provided a polymer obtained by polymerizing the polymerizable composition, and an optically anisotropic body using the polymer. The present invention provides a polymerizable low-wavelength dispersive or polymerizable reverse-wavelength dispersive compound having a partial structure represented by Formula (Z-0). Further, the present invention provides a composition containing the compound; a polymer obtained by polymerizing the composition; and an optically anisotropic body obtained by using the polymer.

The liquid crystal display device is characterized in that a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal composition is disposed between a substrate provided with a common electrode and a color filter layer and another substrate provided with a plurality of pixels each having a pixel electrode, each of the substrates is not provided with an alignment film but provided with an orientation controlling layer composed of at least two polymerizable compounds, each of the pixels has two or more regions having different directions of pretilt, and the liquid crystal composition contains a compound represented by General Formula (I) and a compound represented by General Formula (II).
