The present invention provides a noble metal fine particle with a protein adsorbed thereon, including a noble metal fine particle, and a protein adsorbed on a surface of the noble metal fine particle. The protein has an isoelectric point in a range of pH 4.0 to 7.5. An amount of the protein adsorbed is in a range of 3 to 55.1 wt % with respect to a total weight of the noble metal fine particle and the protein. The noble metal fine particle with a protein adsorbed thereon according to the present invention has excellent redispersibility. That is, by adjusting the pH of a noble metal fine particle dispersed liquid to the isoelectric point of the proteins and allowing the noble metal fine particles to be aggregated without adding a degrading enzyme that degrades the proteins to the noble metal fine particle dispersed liquid, it is possible to allow the noble metal fine particles with proteins adsorbed thereon withdrawn from the noble metal fine particle dispersed liquid to have an average particle diameter that is not increased significantly even after they are redispersed in another dispersion medium.

There is disclosed a photocatalyst which comprises a substrate having a photocatalytic function and metallic nanocolloid particles that are supported on the substrate by the use of a metallic nanocolloid liquid substantially free from a protective colloid formation agent. A highly active photocatalyst containing metallic ultrafine particles is provided by bringing a substrate such as fine particles having a photocatalytic function into contact with a metallic nanocolloid liquid which is substantially free from a protective colloid formation agent, and which has favorable dispersion stability even if containing metallic nanocolloid particles in a relatively high concentration. Accordingly the photocatalyst containing metallic ultrafine particles can be produced at a low cost without being restricted on the place of production.

There are disclosed metallic colloid particles containing platinum fine particles wherein platinum colloid particles are supported on the surfaces of gold colloid particles, and the platinum fine particles have an average particle diameter of at most 5 nm; a process for producing the metallic colloid particles; a metallic corpuscular carrying body wherein the above metallic colloid particles are supported on a carrier and a process for producing the carrying body. The resultant metallic colloid particles, which have higher sensitivity, are well suited as a label for immunological measurement and protein-staining agent for various proteins.

The forming conditions of the starting material glass plate are controlled such that the starting material glass plate has a long-wavelength waviness of not more than 6 nm. This starting material glass plate is polished so as to have a long-wavelength waviness of not more than 6 nm using CeOabrasive grains having a mean grain diameter of not less than 0.01 &#x3bc;m and a 90% diameter of the volume grain size distribution of not less than 0.02 &#x3bc;m. The resulting substrate for an information recording medium has an excellent planarity, can be obtained in a short time and with a low polishing amount, and the resulting information recording medium is able to cope with increased data zone recording density.

There are provided a method of manufacturing a glass substrate for information recording media that allows the inner and outer peripheral edge surfaces of the glass substrate for information recording media to be smoothed easily and inexpensively, a glass substrate for information recording media manufactured using this method, and an information recording medium using this glass substrate. A donut-shaped glass disk for information recording media having an outer peripheral edge surface and an inner peripheral edge surface is prepared. At least one of the outer peripheral edge surface and the inner peripheral edge surface of the glass disk is smoothed by melt-heating to a temperature at or above the softening point of the glass by irradiating with at least one laser beam. As a result, at least one of the outer peripheral edge surface and the inner peripheral edge surface of the glass disk becomes smooth and rounded, and hence a polishing step used in a conventional method can be omitted, and moreover chamfering in a grinding step can also be omitted.
