A superconducting coil is provided with a superconducting coil portion having a plurality of concentric coil layer portions. The superconducting coil portion is formed by winding a thin-film superconducting wire and an insulating material with a multilayer structure, wherein the concentric coil layer portions are adjacent to each other at boundary portions having adhesive force that are set to be less than that of other portions. The concentric coil layer portions each has a non-circular shape or circular shape.

Superconducting coil

A superconducting apparatus is provided with windings having superconducting wires wound in a plurality of turns, and a cryostat housing the windings so as to cool the windings in a superconducting state. The superconducting wires disposed at the outer and inner peripheral areas of the windings are selected to be highly stabilized superconducting wires such that, even if frictional heat is conducted towards the windings, the highly stabilized superconducting wires are very less quenched and in turn the possibility of the quenching of the overall windings is extremely low. Further, good heat conductors are provided on the radially outer and inner of the windings. Frictional heat which flows towards the windings is transmitted into the good heat conductors in the circumferential direction, and is dissipated midway during the heat conduction. As a result, the introduction of the frictional heat into the windings is avoided and in consequence no quenching occurs in the superconducting wires. This enables the overall windings to be prevented from being quenched.

Superconducting coil apparatus with a quenching prevention means

A superconducting coil device in accordance with the present invention includes a cryostat formed by accommodating liquid helium, a superconducting coil which is accommodated in the cryostat along with liquid helium, a persistent current switch for short-circuiting the ends of the superconducting coil, and a thyristor connected to both ends of the persistent current switch. The gate electrode of the thyristor and the intermediate tap of the superconducting coil are connected via a resistor and/or diode. To both ends of the persistent current switch there are connected each of one end of leads that are formed by superconducting wire, and on the other ends of lead wires there are provided terminals. In addition, in the exterios of the cryostat there is provided a power supply for charging and discharging the superconducting coil by being connected selectively to that terminals.
