Disclosed is a hot-melt adhesive composition comprising (a) 20 to 70 parts by weight of a vinyl aromatic compound/conjugated diene copolymer or a hydrogenation product thereof, (b) 30 to 80 parts by weight of an alicyclic hydrocarbon resin tackifier, the total amount of the components (a) and (b) being 100 parts by weight, and (c) 0.3 to 20 parts by weight of a random copolymer of a cyclic olefin and ethylene.

An aromatic hydrocarbon in which at least one hydrogen atom on the ring is substituted by a group selected from the class consisting of unsubstituted or lower alkyl-substituted tricyclo[5.2.1.0.sup.2,6 ]dec-3-yl, tricyclo[5.2.1.0.sup.2,6 ]dec-4-yl, tetracyclo[6.2.1.1.sup.3,6.0.sup.2,7 ]dodec-4-yl and tetracyclo[6.2.1.1.sup.3,6.0.sup.2,7 ]dodec-5-yl groups, or its hydrogenation product. The compound is prepared by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon having at least one hydrogen atom on the ring with a compound selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted or lower alkyl-substituted tricyclo[5.2.1.0.sup.2,6 ]dec-3-ene and tetracyclo[6.2.1.1.sup.3,6.0.sup.2,7 ]dodec-4-ene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, or hydrogenating the thus-obtained compound in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. The compound is useful as an additive for adhesives.

Novel substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, processes for production

A hydrocarbon resin consisting essentially of a copolymer of (A) an unsaturated chain hydrocarbon or a cyclic hydrocarbon having a vinylidene group and (B) 9,10-dihydrodicyclopentadiene or its derivative, or a hydrocarbon resin modified by addition reacting an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or its anhydride, or hydrogen, to the above-mentioned copolymer. The hydrocarbon resin and the modified hydrocarbon resin have a high softening point and a low melt viscosity, and are suitable for use in adhesives and traffic paints.

A hot-melt compound comprising 30 to 70% by weight of a modified ethylene..alpha.-olefin copolymer rubber having a melt index of at most 500 and prepared by grafting an unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivative thereof to an ethylene..alpha.-olefin copolymer rubber or a partial ester of said modified copolymer rubber and 70 to 30% by weight of a tackifier.
