This invention provides a process for producing an aqueous resin dispersion in which the average particle diameter of the dispersed resin is not more than 500 nm, comprising finely dispersing a monomeric mixture (I) containing (A) fatty acid-modified polymerizable unsaturated monomer and (B) other polymerizable unsaturated monomer which is copolymerizable with the monomer (A) in an aqueous medium in such a manner that the dispersed particles have an average particle diameter not more than 500 nm, and polymerizing the resulting emulsified product. The invention also provides aqueous resin compositions which comprise the aqueous resin dispersions, and water-based paint compositions which comprise the aqueous resin compositions.

Process for producing aqueous resin dispersions

A cold setting coating composition comprises an urethane-modified vinyl resin (A) produced by reacting a reaction product with an isocyanate group-possessing compound (c). The reaction product is produced by reacting an epoxy group-containing vinyl copolymer (a) with a fatty acid component (b) containing an unsaturated fatty acid. The vinyl copolymer (a) is a copolymer of a first polymerizable unsaturated monomer containing an epoxy group and a second polymerizable unsaturated monomer. The composition also comprises a polymer dispersion (B) obtained by polymerizing two or more of vinyl monomers in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer (d) in an organic liquid in which vinyl monomers are soluble and a polymer formed from the monomers is insoluble. The dispersion stabilizer (d) is soluble in the organic liquid. The coating composition improved weathering resistance and water resistance of the resulting coated film.

A coating resin composition comprising as a main component an epoxy-polyamine resin resulting from the addition of (d) an amine compound having active hydrogen to an epoxy resin obtained by reacting (a) a diepoxide compound with less than 1 equivalent, per equivalent of the diepoxide compound (a), of (b) a bisphenol, said diepoxide compound being obtained by reacting a dihydric dimer alcohol derived from an unsaturated fatty acid or aliphatic unsaturated alcohol having 14 to 24 carbon atoms with an epihalohydrin; and a coating resin composition comprising as a main component an epoxy-polyamine resin resulting from the addition of (d) an amine compound having active hydrogen to an epoxy resin obtained by reacting (a) a diepoxide compound with more than 1 equivalent, per equivalent of the diepoxide compound (a), of (b) a bisphenol and further reacting the product with (c) bisphenol diglycidyl ether, said diepoxide compound being obtained by reacting a dihydric dimer alcohol derived from an unsaturated fatty acid or aliphatic unsaturated alcohol having 14 to 24 carbon atoms with an epihalohydrin.
